Chapter 14 - The Convergence

The blinding white light swallowed the alcove, washing out the shadows, the dirt walls, and the damp air in an instant. Mark threw his arms up to shield his eyes, the roar of the rushing wind deafening him.
"Daddy!" Mia's voice screamed from somewhere inside the blinding glare.
"Elena!" Mark shouted, stumbling forward blindly through the white void, his boots kicking up dust and shattered wood. He reached out, his fingers catching on the fabric of a small shirt. He pulled hard, drawing the small form against his chest.
The light began to fade rapidly, the roaring wind dying down into a soft, ambient hum.
Mark blinked hard, his vision slowly returning as the harsh, fluorescent lights of the modern home office flickered on above them.
He was sitting in the ergonomic chair at his desk in the study. The computer monitor was glowing green, displaying the home security dashboard with all cameras functioning normally, showing empty, quiet rooms across the house.
Elena was standing beside the desk, clutching her silky beige top, breathing heavily as she stared around the room in utter bewilderment. "Mark... what... what just happened? Where were we?"
Mark didn't answer immediately. He looked down in his arms.
Mia was sitting on his lap, clutching her worn, stitched-up stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest. Her eyes were wide and clear, free of the glazed, distant look she had worn in the crawl space.
"Daddy?" Mia whispered, her lower lip trembling. "I had a bad dream. I dreamed we were in the dark basement with two little girls."
Mark let out a long, shuddering breath, wrapping his arms around both his wife and daughter. "It's okay, sweetheart. We're awake now. We're right here."
He looked up at the computer monitor. The security log showed no errors, no tampering, no hidden partitions. The digital timer was gone, replaced by the standard system status: All Systems Secure.
Elena walked to the study door and peeked out into the quiet hallway. "The front door is locked, Mark. I checked. The house is completely secure."
Mark stood up, setting Mia gently on her feet. "Let's go check the rest of the house. Just to be sure."
They walked through the house together, turning on lights in every room. The dining room was quiet and undisturbed. The kitchen was clean. The upstairs hallway was bathed in the warm, normal glow of the overhead fixtures. The guest room was empty, the computer there turned off and cold.
Everything was back to normal. The nightmare was over.
Mark walked back down to the study, letting out a heavy sigh of relief as he reached for the master power switch to shut down the security system for the rest of the night.
As his hand hovered over the power button, the multi-camera grid on the monitor flickered once.
Mark paused, his hand freezing in the air.

In the bottom-left corner of the monitor, the camera feed for the master bedroom upstairs showed Mark, Elena, and Mia standing safely in the hallway—while right behind them, standing in the exact same spot, were two small figures in white dresses, staring directly into the camera lens with wide, unblinking eyes.
