Chapter 10 - The Voice on the Line

"You took our home, Mark," the voice whispered through the receiver, sounding distorted and multi-layered, as if multiple children were speaking at once into the same mouthpiece.
Mark gripped the plastic handle tightly, his knuckles turning white. "Who is this? What do you want with my family?"
"We want what was taken," the voice replied, the tone shifting from a whisper to a harsh, crackling static. "The threshold was broken thirty years ago. Now, the debt must be paid in full before the timer reaches zero."
"Listen to me," Mark said, trying to keep his voice from shaking. "Whatever happened here in the past, it wasn't us. We didn't hurt you. Just let us leave, and I'll help you however I can."
"There is no leaving," the voice hissed. "Check the security monitor on the desk."
Mark looked down at the computer monitor beside the phone. The multi-camera grid was back up, but instead of the living room or the hallway, every single camera was now focused on the deep interior of the underground crawl space.
On the grainy black-and-white screen, Elena and Mia were no longer standing at the top of the stairs.
Instead, two figures in white dresses were standing right behind Elena and Mia in the second-floor hallway, their cold, pale hands resting gently on Elena’s shoulders. Elena and Mia were staring straight ahead, completely motionless, as if frozen in time.
"Elena!" Mark shouted into the empty study, panic overriding his caution. He dropped the phone receiver, letting it dangle by its coiled cord, and bolted out of the room.
He ran back to the stairs, taking them three at a time, his boots pounding against the wooden steps. He reached the second-floor landing, his chest burning for air.
The hallway was empty.
No Elena. No Mia. No figures in white dresses.
Just the cold wind whistling through the open window of the guest room at the end of the hall, and a single trail of muddy footprints leading directly toward the basement access panel in the floor of the linen closet.
Mark froze, staring at the muddy tracks. The closet door stood wide open, revealing the steep, dark drop leading down into the earth.
From the darkness below, a soft, familiar voice drifted up, calling his name.
