Chapter 4 - The Hidden Space

Mark stepped closer to the back wall of the basement, the beam of his flashlight locked onto the scrap of white fabric fluttering slightly in the damp draft.
"Mark, what is that?" Elena called down from the top of the stairs, her voice laced with mounting hysteria. "Just come back up. Please."
"Hold on," Mark muttered, reaching out to pull the fabric from the rusty nail. It was a piece of cheap cotton lace, identical to the trim on the dresses worn by the figures on the security footage. His fingers brushed against the wooden paneling of the wall, and he realized with a start that it wasn’t solid concrete back here. It was a makeshift partition wall, crudely nailed together with old plywood and insulation foam.
"Daddy, hurry," Mia’s voice echoed faintly from the kitchen above. "They're moving again."
Mark didn't hesitate. He grabbed the edge of the plywood panel and pulled with all his weight. With a loud, splintering crack, the entire section gave way, tumbling inward into the darkness. A wave of stale, frigid air rushed out, carrying the heavy, metallic scent of old iron and damp earth. Mark coughed, waving the dust away as he thrust the flashlight into the newly opened cavity.
The beam cut through a narrow, hidden corridor that extended deep beneath the foundations of the neighboring properties. It was lined with discarded blankets, empty juice boxes, and children's drawings taped haphazardly to the exposed brick.
Mark stepped through the broken partition, his boots crunching on dry leaves and debris. "Who's here?" he demanded, his voice echoing in the cramped tunnel. "Show yourself!"
At the far end of the corridor, near a rusted ventilation grate leading outside, something moved. A small shape scurried into the deeper shadows, moving with an eerie, spider-like agility that defied normal human motion. Mark raised the flashlight, his breath catching in his throat as the beam illuminated a pair of wide, unblinking eyes staring back at him from the dark.
It was a young girl, no older than Mia, wearing a filthy white dress and clutching an old, eyeless doll.

Before Mark could speak, the girl smiled—a wide, unnatural grin—and pointed a slender finger directly behind him.
