Chapter 9

Ninety-eight percent. Ninety-nine percent. The progress bar froze for a agonizing second before flashing a bright, solid green. Transfer Complete.
Clara immediately reached out, ejecting the small, matte-black quantum drive from the side of the terminal and slipping it into the pocket of her pale yellow dress. "Done," she whispered, exhaling a long, shaky breath. "The cloud database is completely wiped. There is nothing left upstairs for them to steal."
Before Julian could respond, the heavy steel-reinforced door of the bunker shuddered violently. A sharp, mechanical whining sound pierced the air—a diamond-tipped core drill biting into the thick locking mechanism from the outside. Sparks began to spray through the tiny microscopic gaps around the door frame, illuminating the swirling dust particles in the dim room.
"They bypassed the hydraulic seals," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of grim acceptance. She stepped in front of Julian’s wheelchair, her hands resting calmly at her sides, embodying a quiet, unbreakable courage. "They are cutting through the manual override pins."
Julian looked at his daughter, his expression softening into an expression of profound sorrow and fierce affection. "Clara, listen to me very carefully," he said, his voice dropping to a low, urgent murmur. "There is a secondary escape tunnel at the far end of this room. It leads out into the old drainage culvert three hundred yards down into the ravine. Take the drive and go."
"I am not leaving you here, Dad," Clara said instantly, her voice rising with sudden defiance. "We go together, or we stay together."
"You cannot push this wheelchair through a muddy drainage culvert, Clara," Julian reasoned, his voice firm and unwavering. "My legs are useless, and my presence will only ensure that all three of us are caught. Elena and I will hold them at the door. You have the data. You are the only one who can ensure Vance’s work reaches the independent medical ethics board in the city."
The drill bit screamed as it punched completely through the thick steel pin of the locking mechanism. With a loud, echoing crack, the heavy door groaned, the locking bolts failing one by one under the immense pressure.

Elena turned to Clara, her dark eyes intense and steady. "He is right, Clara. Your father gave you the future tonight. Do not let them take it back." She reached out, pressing a hidden floor panel near the back wall that smoothly slid open to reveal a dark, narrow brick-lined tunnel leading away into the earth.
Clara felt tears prick the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She pulled the quantum drive tighter in her pocket, gave her father one last, lingering look of absolute devotion, and slipped backward into the dark opening as the heavy bunker door finally began to swing inward.
