Chapter 5

The crunch of gravel grew steadily louder, vibrating through the thick timber foundations of the old house. Julian stiffened in his wheelchair, his head turning sharply toward the tall study windows that looked out over the front lawn. The heavy velvet drapes remained drawn, blocking out the outside world, but the headlights of the approaching vehicle cut long, sweeping beams of light across the ceiling through the sheer inner curtains.
"Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that commanded immediate action. "Check the monitors. Now."
Without a word, Elena turned toward a sleek, matte-black control panel discreetly built into the wooden shelving beside the desk. Her fingers flew across the touch-sensitive surface, bringing up a live feed from the security cameras mounted at the gated entrance of the estate. A single, dark utility vehicle was idling near the wrought-iron gates, its high beams glaring directly into the camera lens, whiting out the screen.
Clara felt a cold chill run down her spine. Her heart began to race again, though this time it was not out of anger toward Elena, but pure, unadulterated dread. "Who is that?" she asked, stepping closer to her father’s chair as if seeking physical protection from the invisible threat outside. "Did you invite someone tonight?"
"No," Julian replied, his jaw set in a hard line. He reached down and gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his knuckles turning stark white. "Nobody knows we are at this location except Vance and our legal team. And they do not make house calls at nine o'clock at night."
Elena tapped the screen, switching the camera angle to a side lens that bypassed the blinding headlights. The image sharpened, revealing two figures stepping out of the utility vehicle. They wore dark tactical jackets, their faces obscured by the shadows of the overhanging oaks. One of them stepped forward, reaching out to test the integrity of the locked gates with an practiced, heavy shove.
"They are bypassing the perimeter sensors," Elena said, her voice entirely devoid of panic, though her fingers moved with urgent speed across the console. "The system is locking down, but their signal repeater is attempting to override our local network."

"Cut the main power," Julian ordered immediately. "Go to internal reserves. Do not let them trace our IP address."
Clara watched the two figures on the monitor with a growing sense of panic. The illusion of safety that the estate had provided for the past six months shattered in an instant. Whatever secret Julian had been keeping, whatever research was contained within the medical journals on these shelves, it had finally caught up with them. She looked down at her pale yellow dress, suddenly feeling terribly exposed in the brightly colored fabric. She needed to act, to find a way to help, before the men outside breached the iron gates and brought their hidden world crashing down into the open.
