Chapter 13

The predawn mist hung low over the gravel service road as Clara pushed through the dense thicket of pine trees behind the truck stop. The sky overhead was beginning to turn a bruised, deep shade of violet, marking the arrival of a new day that brought neither peace nor safety. Her muscles ached with a dull, throbbing intensity, but fear kept her moving forward at a brisk, determined pace.
Marker post forty-two loomed out of the fog—a weathered wooden sign half-swallowed by creeping ivy. Clara ducked beneath a rusted barbed-wire fence, slipping into the overgrown yard of the abandoned maintenance depot. The old loading dock stood silently against the gray horizon, its wooden planks rotting and covered in thick patches of moss.
Idling quietly beside the loading ramp was a dark, nondescript sedan, its headlights completely extinguished. As Clara stepped out from the treeline, the passenger-side door clicked open smoothly, and a man in a dark trench coat leaned out, scanning the perimeter before gesturing for her to approach.
Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, remembering Sterling’s warning, but the familiar silver signet ring on the man's right hand—the same ring worn by all of Sterling’s trusted investigators—dissuaded her doubts. She hurried across the gravel lot, pulled open the car door, and slid into the warm interior of the vehicle, slamming the door shut behind her.
"Do you have it?" the driver asked quietly, his face partially obscured by the shadow of his fedora.
Without a word, Clara reached into the pocket of her pale yellow dress, pulled out the matte-black quantum drive, and handed it directly to him. The man inserted it into a portable reader connected to the car's dashboard console, watching as a green confirmation light blinked twice, verifying the integrity of the encrypted files.
"All files intact," the driver murmured, exhaling a sigh of relief. He slipped the drive into a secure metal briefcase locked to the floorboard. "Mr. Sterling was right. You handled yourself with remarkable composure, young lady."
"We need to go back for them," Clara said, her voice shaking with restrained emotion as she turned to face the driver. "Mr. Sterling said federal marshals were being mobilized, but every minute we waste here gives Apex time to cover their tracks."

"The marshals are already moving in on the estate," the driver assured her, shifting the car into gear as they rolled silently away from the depot. "By the time the sun is fully up, your father and Elena will be in federal protective custody, and the corporate executives who ordered this raid will be facing indictments for conspiracy and violation of federal medical statutes."
Clara leaned back against the plush leather seat, closing her eyes as the car accelerated down the deserted highway. The physical exhaustion finally caught up with her, pulling her down into a deep, dreamless sleep as the first rays of golden sunlight broke through the heavy morning clouds.
