Chapter 2

Clara refused to move any closer. Her boots remained planted firmly on the hardwood floor, a few feet away from the heavy leather wheelchair where Julian sat. The air in the study felt suffocating, thick with the scent of old paper, polished mahogany, and the faint, sterile odor of rubbing alcohol that clung to Elena’s clothes.

"I won't let you give him that," Clara whispered, her voice dropping from a desperate shout to a trembling threat. She kept her wide blue eyes fixed on the clear liquid inside the glass barrel of the syringe. "Dr. Vance said no more experimental treatments. He was clear about that before he left for the city."

Elena exhaled slowly, her posture remaining upright and defensive. She clutched the syringe between her thumb and forefinger with practiced precision. "Dr. Vance is a cautious man who plays by bureaucratic rules, Clara," Elena replied, her tone remarkably steady. "Your father does not have the luxury of time. Every hour he spends fighting this neurological decline is an hour stolen from his mind. This serum slows the degradation of motor neurons. It is a calculated risk, one he consented to weeks ago when you were still away at school."

Clara glanced down at her father. Julian’s expression was unreadable, etched deep with exhaustion and the physical toll of his long illness. His dark hair was threaded with premature gray at the temples, and his stubble gave him a hardened, weathered look that contrasted sharply with the wealthy, manicured estate they inhabited.

"Is that true, Dad?" Clara asked, her voice cracking slightly as she looked back into his tired eyes. "Did you agree to this?"

Julian swallowed hard, his throat moving visibly above the collar of his white shirt. He shifted his weight in the brown suit, the leather creaking under him. "I agreed to fight, Clara," he murmured, speaking with deliberate slowness. "And sometimes fighting requires unorthodox methods. Elena is only doing what I asked her to do when the pain becomes too much to bear."

A heavy silence settled over the room once more. Clara felt a cold knot twist in her stomach. She knew her father was stubborn, a man who built his entire career on taking dangerous gambles in the financial markets, but gambling with his own life felt entirely different. She looked at Elena again, noticing for the first time the faint dark circles under the older woman's eyes. Elena wasn't an assassin or an enemy; she was a dedicated researcher who had lived in this house for three years, managing Julian’s declining health with cold, unyielding efficiency. Yet, there was a secret shared between the two adults that Clara had been systematically excluded from. She tightened her fists in the folds of her pale yellow dress, realizing that uncovering the truth would mean stepping into a labyrinth of dangerous medical ethics and hidden pasts from which she might never return.
