Chapter 6

The study plunged into absolute darkness as Elena severed the main power grid. The only illumination came from the faint, pulsing blue light of the security console and the pale moonlight bleeding through the edges of the heavy drapes. The sudden quiet was profound, broken only by the rhythmic, heavy breathing of Julian in his wheelchair and the distant, muffled thud of the security system attempting to reboot under emergency battery power.

"Stay behind me, Clara," Julian whispered, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no argument, despite his physical frailty. He maneuvered the joystick on the armrest of his wheelchair, pivoting the heavy chair toward the heavy mahogany bookshelf on the far wall.

Clara obeyed instantly, her hand gripping the sleeve of Elena’s dark blue velvet dress in the dark. Elena did not pull away; instead, she reached out, her fingers finding Clara’s cold hand and squeezing it reassuringly. "We are moving to the basement bunker," Elena murmured softly. "There is a reinforced panic room behind the paneling. Stay low and do not make a sound."

Julian reached out and pressed a hidden toggle switch located beneath the ornate wooden trim of the bookshelf. With a low, pneumatic hiss, a massive section of the wooden shelving swung inward on heavy steel hinges, revealing a dark, descending staircase lit by faint, amber emergency strips along the risers. The smell of cool, damp concrete drifted up from the hidden space below, mixing with the scent of old paper.

"Move, Clara. Now," Julian urged, rolling his wheelchair smoothly toward the opening.

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting back toward the study door that led out to the main hallway. "What about our things? What if they break through the front door and search the house?"

"Let them search," Elena said, gently guiding Clara toward the open staircase. "The house is designed to look like a standard residence, but there is nothing on the main floor that can link your father’s medical trials to the corporate entity holding the patents. The real data is encrypted and stored locally in the bunker's isolated server."

They descended quickly into the subterranean shelter. Julian maneuvered his wheelchair down the custom-built ramp with practiced ease, his tires humming softly against the rubberized floor of the bunker. Once inside, Elena reached back and pulled the heavy steel-reinforced panel shut. It locked into place with a resounding, metallic thud that echoed heavily in the enclosed space, sealing them off from the upper floors of the estate.

The bunker was surprisingly spacious, outfitted with medical equipment, computer monitors, and emergency provisions. A single overhead light flickered on, casting a harsh, sterile glow over the room. Julian rolled over to the primary workstation, his face pale under the fluorescent lights, but his eyes burned with fierce concentration. He immediately began typing commands into an encrypted terminal, initiating a complete wipe of the upstairs network before the intruders could establish a connection.
