Chapter 10

The air inside the brick-lined drainage tunnel was cold, damp, and heavy with the scent of wet earth and decaying leaves. Clara crawled on her hands and knees, the rough masonry scraping against her knees through the fabric of her pale yellow dress. The distant sounds of the bunker door breaching—the shouts, the heavy boots stepping onto the concrete floor, and Elena’s calm, unyielding voice demanding identification—echoed faintly behind her down the hollow concrete tube before fading into the subterranean silence.

She moved with desperate speed, her breath coming in ragged gasps that echoed off the curved ceiling. Every muscle in her body ached, but the adrenaline coursing through her veins completely drowned out the physical fatigue. She clutched the pocket holding the quantum drive like a lifeline, knowing that the entire weight of her father’s life's work—and the lives of countless patients suffering from the same degenerative condition—rested entirely on her ability to get out of the estate undetected.

After what felt like hours of crawling through absolute darkness, the narrow tube began to slope upward. A faint, pale sliver of moonlight appeared ahead, cutting through the shadows and signaling the end of the tunnel. Clara increased her pace, ignoring the sharp stones cutting into her palms until she finally tumbled out of the low brick archway and landed clumsily in the deep, overgrown brush of the ravine.

She lay flat on her stomach in the wet grass, pulling her limbs close to her body to blend into the shadows of the surrounding oak trees. Panting softly, she wiped the dirt and sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand. The night air was crisp, biting sharply against her skin through the light material of her dress.

Looking up through the dense canopy of branches, she could see the glowing windows of the estate perched high on the edge of the cliff above. Tiny figures moved back and forth across the lawn under the harsh beams of utility vehicle headlights. They were searching the perimeter, realizing too late that the data had vanished and that someone had escaped through the secondary routes.

Clara knew she could not stay in the ravine for long. The pursuers would quickly deduce that the drainage tunnel led down to the creek bed and deploy tracking teams to comb the surrounding woods. She pushed herself up to her feet, her legs trembling slightly from exhaustion, and began to pick her way cautiously through the dense undergrowth, heading south toward the old highway where she hoped to flag down a passing vehicle before morning.
