Chapter 9: Sirens in the Night

Before Evelyn could turn to run, the distant wail of police sirens pierced the quiet night air, echoing through the open window of the study. The red and blue flashing lights painted rhythmic geometric patterns across the heavy mahogany bookshelves.

Dr. Vance sank into a leather armchair, burying his face in his hands as he began to weep softly—not from remorse, but from the terrifying realization of his ruined career and impending prison sentence.

Arthur didn't move. He kept his eyes locked on Evelyn, his expression a monument of profound disappointment and hard-won clarity. "You thought you were the smartest person in the room, Evelyn. But greed makes people sloppy. You focused so much on the corporate bylaws that you forgot basic human loyalty."

"Loyalty?" Evelyn sneered, her voice rising in pitch as desperation finally took hold. "In our world, loyalty is just a currency traded by fools! You bought my loyalty with a diamond ring and a penthouse, Arthur. Don't act surprised when someone higher bidder comes along!"

Heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase, followed by sharp knocks at the study door and the authoritative voice of the precinct captain. "Sterling! Open up! Federal marshals and local police!"

Julian stepped forward and unlocked the heavy oak door. Two armed officers rushed into the room, their weapons drawn, instantly assessing the tactical situation. They saw Arthur with the hunting revolver held safely at his side, Dr. Vance weeping in the armchair, and Evelyn standing near the threshold with wild, frantic eyes.

"Evelyn Sterling," the lead officer said, stepping forward with handcuffs ready. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, financial fraud, and corporate espionage."

Evelyn didn't fight as the cold steel cuffs snapped around her wrists. She didn't scream or throw a tantrum; her descent into defeat was as calculated as her rise to power. But as the officers led her past Arthur, she turned her head and whispered, "The audits are already set in motion, Arthur. Even behind bars, I've broken your empire."

The door closed behind them, leaving the study in a heavy, exhausted silence. Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, her legs finally giving way slightly, prompting Julian to instinctively step forward and steady her arm.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked quietly, his corporate detachment entirely replaced by genuine human concern.

Clara nodded, resting her hand protectively over her stomach. "The baby is safe. That’s all that matters."

Arthur laid the hunting revolver back into the cabinet and locked the glass door. He looked at his daughter, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "We have a long fight ahead of us tomorrow, Clara. But tonight, our family is intact."
