Chapter 8: The Mask Slips Completely

Evelyn stood in the doorway, her beige sleeveless dress catching the harsh lamplight of the study. She didn't look at Dr. Vance, whose shoulders slumped in absolute defeat. Instead, her gaze locked onto Arthur with a cold, unyielding hatred.

"You pathetic old fool," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with venom. "You really thought you could build an empire and keep it locked away in a gilded cage forever, didn't you? You were ready to hand everything over to a daughter who knows nothing about running a global corporation."

"This is my family, Evelyn," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he gripped the hunting revolver by his side. "Everything I built was for them. Not for you, and certainly not for your offshore syndicates."

"Family?" Evelyn laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the mahogany bookshelves. "You don't know the meaning of the word. You spent thirty years working seventy-hour weeks, ignoring your first wife until she drank herself into an early grave, and then you expected me to play the dutiful nursemaid to your twilight years?"

"Then why marry me?" Arthur asked, stepping closer to her. "Why play the part for three years?"

"Because the Sterling conglomerate was too big to take over from the outside," Evelyn replied, crossing her arms with absolute defiance. "I needed legal standing. I needed your signature on the corporate restructuring documents. And once this child was born, your will would have been irrevocably rewritten to divide the primary voting shares. I had to eliminate the bloodline before it cemented its hold."

Clara stood up from the settee, ignoring the lingering pain in her abdomen. She walked toward Evelyn, her eyes blazing with a fierce, protective maternal instinct. "You almost killed me, Evelyn. You pushed me onto the marble floor. You orchestrated the entire thing."

"And I regret failing," Evelyn spat back without a shred of remorse. "If Martha hadn't lost her nerve at the last second and delayed the security team, you wouldn't be standing here right now interrogating me."

Julian pulled his phone from his pocket, holding the screen toward Evelyn. "The audio recording of your confession, along with Dr. Vance’s testimony, has just been transmitted to the federal prosecutor’s office and the board of directors. The gates are locked, the police are five minutes out, and your private jet has been grounded by the FAA."

Evelyn’s eyes darted to Julian’s phone. For the first time, genuine panic broke through her icy exterior. She looked around the room, realizing the trap was absolute. There were no exits left, no corporate loopholes to exploit, no legal documents to forge.

"You think the police will save you?" Evelyn hissed, taking a sudden step backward toward the hallway. "When the federal audits hit Sterling Industries tomorrow morning, your entire empire will collapse under the weight of your own negligence!"
