Chapter 2: Shifting Loyalties in the Shadows

The chaos of the overturned console table sent immediate ripples through the gathering guests, but Arthur's booming voice froze everyone in place. Julian stepped forward, his polished oxfords crunching on fragments of shattered decorative glass. He glanced nervously between Evelyn, who was rapidly regaining her composure, and Arthur, whose jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently.
"Arthur, we need to handle this quietly," Julian murmured, his voice laced with corporate anxiety. He adjusted his patterned tie, acutely aware that the Sterling family’s multi-million-dollar merger depended on public stability.
Clara remained on the floor, clutching her abdomen as a fresh wave of pain radiated through her lower back. She looked up at Julian, recognizing the cold calculation in his eyes. Julian was not an ally; he was a survivor who would back whoever held the checkbook. Evelyn adjusted the hem of her beige dress, her breathing entirely unlabored, as if she hadn't just attempted to violently injure her stepdaughter and husband.
"Clara is simply hysterical," Evelyn said smoothly, stepping around a velvet-wrapped box. "The stress of the pregnancy, coupled with her lingering grief over her mother, has clearly affected her mind. Arthur, you saw how she lunged. She tripped over the gifts."
Arthur did not answer immediately. He looked at his wife, truly looked at her, searching for the woman he had married three years ago. The realization was dawning on him that Evelyn was a stranger who had meticulously woven herself into the fabric of his dynasty with a hidden agenda. He reached down, ignoring Julian’s outstretched hand, and gently lifted Clara into his arms. Despite his sixty-five years, Arthur possessed the lingering strength of a self-made man.
"Call Dr. Vance immediately," Arthur instructed Julian, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And lock the front gates. No one leaves this estate until I have answers."

Evelyn’s face tightened just a fraction, a micro-expression of panic that Clara caught despite her pain. The mask was slipping. Evelyn had not planned on Arthur turning against her so quickly. She had counted on his aging mind and his deep-seated desire to avoid scandal. But the mention of Dr. Vance—the family physician who knew the medical history of the Sterling bloodline—signaled that Arthur was finally looking past the glossy veneer of his second marriage.
As Arthur carried Clara toward the private elevator at the end of the grand hallway, Julian stood frozen, watching Evelyn with newfound suspicion. The corporate shark realized the water was bloody, and he had to choose which side of the razor to swim on.
