Chapter 3: The Confession in the West Wing

The private elevator ride to the west wing was agonizingly silent. Clara rested her head against her father’s shoulder, tears finally spilling over her lashes, not from weakness, but from a profound, burning relief. Arthur had believed her. At least, he had chosen to investigate.
They reached the master study, a room lined with leather-bound books and heavy mahogany furniture. Arthur gently laid Clara on the velvet settee, immediately calling for blankets and warm water from the terrified domestic staff. Once they were alone, save for Julian who had followed them up, Arthur locked the heavy oak door.
"Talk to me," Arthur said, kneeling beside the settee. His voice was no longer that of a corporate tyrant; it was the voice of a terrified father. "Tell me everything, Clara. From the beginning."
Clara took a ragged breath, pressing a hand against her rounded stomach. "It started three months ago, Dad. When I found out I was pregnant. Evelyn started bringing me these herbal teas, claiming they were for circulation. But I noticed my lab results from my routine check-ups were shifting. My iron levels were dropping dangerously low. When I questioned the house nurse, she was dismissed the next day."
Julian leaned against a bookshelf, crossing his arms. "That’s a serious accusation, Clara. Do you have proof?"
"I have the original bloodwork reports saved on my cloud storage," Clara replied sharply, glaring at Julian. "Reports that Evelyn didn't think I backed up. She wanted me to miscarry, Dad. She wants to ensure that the Sterling estate goes entirely to her brother’s children through her prenuptial clauses, which she secretly modified last year."
Arthur’s face drained of all color. The prenuptial agreement. He had signed it during a weekend getaway in Geneva, trusting Evelyn's legal counsel implicitly. He remembered the clauses she had added regarding corporate succession and secondary heirs. He had dismissed them as standard legal redundancy.
"She used my signature," Arthur whispered, the reality crashing down on him. "She had access to my private notary stamp."

"She has had access to everything, Dad," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "And if you hadn't walked down that hallway when you did, I wouldn't just have lost my baby. You would have been next. The push wasn't just to get rid of me; it was designed to make it look like I attacked you, and you pushed me back in self-defense, resulting in a fatal fall for both of us."
Julian uncrossed his arms, his professional detachment entirely shattered. "If what you’re saying is true, Arthur, Evelyn isn't just playing corporate politics. She’s orchestrating a succession homicide."
