Chapter 4: Unraveling the Legal Web

The heavy mahogany desk in the study became the center of a makeshift war room. Arthur unlocked his secure terminal, his hands trembling slightly as he entered the biometric override for his encrypted corporate archives. Julian stood beside him, peering over his shoulder as financial spreadsheets and legal documents scrolled across the illuminated screen.
"Look here," Julian pointed a manicured finger at a highlighted paragraph. "This amendment was filed six months ago. It transfers voting shares of Sterling Industries to a holding company registered in the Cayman Islands. The beneficiary is listed as an anonymous trust."
"Evelyn’s maiden name," Arthur growled, reading the subtle linguistic markers in the corporate filing. "She used her mother’s maiden name to mask the ownership trail. I approved this during the merger talks because I thought it was a tax-mitigation strategy for our European subsidiaries."
Clara shifted on the settee, wincing as another dull cramp passed through her frame, though the intensity was subsiding now that she was safe from Evelyn's physical proximity. "She’s been systematically draining the liquid assets, Dad. Every time you signed off on a charitable foundation grant, a portion of those funds was being diverted into shell accounts."
Arthur slammed his fist onto the desk, rattling the antique inkwell. "How did I miss this? I built this company from a single storefront into a global conglomerate. I negotiated with hostile takeovers and international cartels. How was I blinded by a woman in a beige dress?"
"Because she played the grieving widow to your loneliness, Arthur," Julian said softly, showing a rare flash of genuine empathy. "You lost your first wife, Clara’s mother, ten years ago. You wanted peace. Evelyn offered you an echo of domestic tranquility, and she used your desire for comfort as a blind spot."
"We can't just confront her," Clara warned, pushing herself up into a sitting position. "If we accuse her openly without the physical ledger, she’ll burn the servers and flee the country by morning. Her private jet is fueled at the municipal airfield; I overheard her speaking to her pilot yesterday afternoon."
Arthur nodded slowly, his analytical mind snapping back into place. The grief and shock were being replaced by a cold, calculated fury. He had survived the cutthroat business world for decades by never showing his hand until the trap was fully sprung.

"Julian," Arthur said, locking eyes with the younger man. "You’re going downstairs. Act as if nothing has happened. Tell Evelyn that I am indisposed with Clara, and that I have called the board for an emergency restructuring meeting at dawn. Watch her reaction. If she tries to access the safe in the east drawing room, let me know immediately."
Julian hesitated for only a second before nodding. "Consider it done, Arthur. But be careful. She isn't working alone. Someone inside the estate has been helping her bypass the security logs."
