Chapter 10: The Aftermath of the Storm

The morning sun broke over the Sterling estate, casting a golden light through the crystal chandelier in the grand hallway where the nightmare had begun less than twenty-four hours earlier. The shattered glass and scattered gifts had been cleared away, but the marble floor still bore the invisible scars of the betrayal that had nearly destroyed a dynasty.
Arthur sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table in the main dining hall, flanked by three senior corporate attorneys and Julian. The emergency board meeting was underway, and the air was thick with tension as financial reports were reviewed line by line.
"The Cayman accounts have been frozen by federal order," lead corporate attorney Marcus Vance—no relation to the disgraced doctor—announced, sliding a document across the table. "We’ve successfully quarantined Evelyn’s holding companies. Sterling Industries will take a temporary hit on the stock exchange when the news breaks at market open, but the core assets remain secure."
Arthur nodded slowly, his fingers steepled in front of him. "And the international subsidiaries?"
"Fully audited and verified," Julian replied, adjusting his patterned tie. "We severed all ties with Evelyn’s secondary syndicates before midnight. The board has voted unanimously to reinstate your absolute voting shares, Arthur."
Arthur exhaled a breath he felt he had been holding for three years. He looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the east gardens, where Clara was sitting on a stone bench, breathing in the crisp morning air. She looked pale, but the strength in her posture was undeniable.
"We need to restructure the entire corporate governance," Arthur said, his voice carrying the iron resolve that had built the company in the first place. "No more blind trusts. No more unchecked proxies. Transparency from top to bottom."
"Agreed," Marcus said. "The federal prosecutors have already indicted Evelyn and Dr. Vance on multiple counts of conspiracy and fraud. Martha has also turned state's evidence, providing us with the internal communication logs concerning the medical tampering."
Arthur’s jaw tightened at the mention of Martha. "Has she been dismissed?"
"Detained alongside Vance," Julian answered quietly. "Loyalty bought with a paycheck always has a cheap expiration date."
Arthur stood up, signaling the end of the morning briefing. The attorneys gathered their files and filed out of the room, leaving only Julian and the patriarch.

"You handled yourself well last night, Julian," Arthur said, clapping a hand onto the younger man's shoulder. "You had every opportunity to side with Evelyn when the pressure mounted."
Julian offered a modest, genuine smile. "I’m a survivor, Arthur, but I’m not a monster. Besides, betting against you has historically been a very bad investment."
