Chapter 6 - The Silver Crest

David snatched the silver cufflink out of Arthur’s gloved hand, his thumb pressing hard against the raised metal crest. The emblem was sharply etched: a stylized hawk clutching a broken quill. It was a crest he had seen only once before, tucked away in the locked bottom drawer of Elena’s mahogany desk downstairs.
"Explain this," David demanded, thrusting the metal piece into Elena’s face. His voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a lethal combination of grief and betrayal. "You said nobody else had access to the house. You said the security codes hadn't been shared."
Elena stared at the cufflink, all the color draining from her face until she looked almost translucent. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She took a step back, her green satin dress rustling against the bedpost as she searched for an excuse that no longer existed.
"It’s Julian’s," Clara whispered from the floor, her voice hollow and shivering. She looked up, her dark eyes hollowed out by shock. "Your business partner, David. Julian was here."
Arthur adjusted his cuffs, his expression one of bored amusement rather than surprise. "Julian Vance is many things, my dear, but he is certainly not a thief. He is merely acting on behalf of the senior board members who realized months ago that this marriage was a sham designed to drain the family trust."
"A sham?" David turned on Arthur, his fist clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "We built a life here. We brought a child into this world."
"A child rented for the convenience of an inheritance," Arthur corrected coldly, stepping closer to David without a hint of fear. "Do you honestly believe Elena loved you, David? You were a convenient project—a middle-class distraction with a clean background that satisfied the trustees' ridiculous moral clauses."
Elena found her voice, though it trembled violently. "That’s not true, David. Not all of it. Julian is working with my father, not me. They want to take everything away from us because we didn't follow their timeline."
"Stop lying!" Clara screamed, finally pushing herself up from the floor. She lunged toward Elena with a sudden, ferocious energy, grabbing the front of the green satin dress. "Where is my baby, Elena? If you gave her to Julian, I swear I will tear this house down brick by brick until I find her!"
Elena struggled against Clara’s grip, her composure entirely gone as she shoved the younger woman away. "I didn't give her to anyone! Julian has his own agenda. He’s been tracking the trust funds since before the birth certificate was even filed!"
David didn't listen to their bickering. He bolted out of the guest room, sprinting down the hallway toward the master study where his laptop and the master security terminal were housed. If Julian had accessed the house, the internal cameras would have recorded every second of the abduction.

He threw open the study door, flicked the wall switch, and stared in disbelief at the computer monitor on the mahogany desk. The screen wasn't displaying the live camera feeds; instead, it displayed a single, blinking text file containing a ransom demand and a specific address across town.
