Chapter 4 - The Unwelcome Visitor

The figure standing in the doorway stepped into the harsh light of the nursery, revealing a sharply tailored gray trench coat and cold, piercing eyes that mirrored Elena’s. It was Arthur Vance, Elena’s estranged uncle and the primary trustee of the family estate. He surveyed the chaotic scene with an air of profound disappointment, his gaze lingering briefly on the scattered legal documents on the floor before settling on David.
"I see the midnight hour is upon us, and the household is still in utter disarray," Arthur said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with condescension. He didn't bother removing his leather gloves. "I expected better management from you, David. Especially given the stakes."
David didn't flinch, holding his ground despite the palpable intimidation radiating from the older man. "Get out of my house, Arthur. This conversation is over."
"Your house?" Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "My dear boy, the deed is in the trust’s name until the stroke of twelve. And as of right now, according to clause fourteen, section B, if the biological mother is incapacitated or deemed unfit within the premises, the entire endowment reverts immediately to the corporate board." Arthur turned his cold gaze toward the crib. "Which appears to be precisely the case."
Clara stepped forward, stepping past David despite his restraining hand. Her pink silk robe billowed slightly in the draft. "I am not incapacitated, Uncle Arthur. And I am certainly not signing away my rights."
Arthur raised a single, well-manicured eyebrow, looking at Clara with undisguised disdain. "My dear child, you spent three weeks in a private sanitarium in upstate New York under heavy sedation. Your signature on the relinquishment form was witnessed by two medical professionals. Legally, you ceased to be a stakeholder the moment you crossed this threshold."
Elena stepped closer to her uncle, her voice dropping into a pleading tone. "Uncle Arthur, we can still fix this. David just needs to understand—"
"Quiet, Elena," Arthur snapped, cutting her off with a flick of his gloved hand. He walked further into the room, his eyes scanning the empty white crib with clinical detachment. "Where is the infant? The trustees specifically stipulated that the child must be present in the nursery for the midnight audit."
David’s blood ran cold. The nursery had been completely quiet all evening. They had been so consumed by their screaming match that none of them had checked the adjacent monitoring room.
Clara gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth as a terrible realization hit her. "The bassinet... I moved her to the guest room hours ago because the paint fumes were too strong near the window."
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes locking onto David with sudden, predatory intensity. "You don't have the baby in the room? Do you have any idea what this means for the trust?"
May you like
Before David could respond, a soft, electronic chime echoed from the monitor sitting on the mahogany changing table, followed immediately by the sound of muffled static and a strange, metallic scrape from down the hall.
