Chapter 11 - The Reckoning

"Put the gun down, Julian," Elena’s voice cut through the stormy night with a terrifying clarity that commanded the attention of every person on the pier. She advanced slowly, the heavy iron tire iron dragging against the wooden planks behind her, leaving a sharp, scraping sound in the wake of her footsteps.

Julian’s eyes darted toward her, a flicker of genuine panic crossing his face for the first time. He shifted the rifle slightly, pointing it away from Clara and toward Elena. "Stay back, Elena! I mean it! I’ll shoot!"

"You won't shoot anything," Arthur intervened sharply, stepping forward and holding out a gloved hand toward Julian. "Put the weapon down, Julian. This has gone far enough. The board will never ratify an acquisition secured through murder and kidnapping. You’ve ruined your own case."

"Shut up, Arthur!" Julian screamed, his face flushing a deep, mottled red as spittle flew from his lips. "You used me as your scapegoat! You promised me the directorship if I cleaned house!"

David used the distraction to lunge forward across the wet dock, moving with silent, explosive speed while Julian’s attention was split between Elena and Arthur. In two massive strides, David closed the distance, his shoulder slamming hard into Julian’s side just as the older man pulled the trigger.

The rifle discharged into the stormy night sky with a deafening crack, the muzzle flash illuminating the dark clouds overhead. The impact sent Julian sprawling sideways against the wooden railing of the pier, his grip loosening on the pink bundle.

Clara screamed, diving forward across the wet boards with reckless abandon. Her hands caught the pink blanket just as it slipped from Julian’s arms, pulling the infant tight against her chest as she hit the wooden deck hard, shielding the baby with her own body.

Elena reached Julian a split second later, bringing the heavy iron tire iron down with a dull, sickening thud against the railing right beside Julian’s head, shattering the wood into splinters. "You touched my family," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed fury.

Julian scrambled backward on the wet wood, his face drained of color as he looked up at the circle of people he had tried to manipulate. He had lost everything—the trust, the leverage, and his freedom.

Arthur stood off to the side, his umbrella slipping from his hand and rolling across the dock as he realized the game was entirely over. He adjusted his coat with trembling fingers, looking at David with a defeated sigh.

"You win, David," Arthur murmured, turning his back on them all. "The trust is yours. All of it."

David ignored Arthur, turning his attention away from the collapsed conspirators and rushing toward Clara where she sat huddled on the wet wooden planks of the pier.
