Chapter 5 - The Empty Bassinet

The electronic monitor crackled with a burst of white noise before a strange, rhythmic tapping sound came through the small speaker. It wasn't the sound of an infant fussing or crying; it sounded like someone tapping fingernails against a wooden frame, slow and deliberate. David’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stared at the little gray box on the changing table.

"Stay here," David muttered, his voice tight with warning as he stepped past Arthur and edged toward the nursery door.

"Don't be a fool, David," Arthur hissed, stepping back to block the exit. "This could be a breach of protocol. If the child isn't secured in the primary nursery, the entire inheritance is forfeit. Let me handle this."

"Move," David snarled, his shoulder brushing past the older man with enough force to send Arthur stumbling against the doorframe. The veneer of polite society had completely shattered, replaced by raw, primal survival instinct.

Clara followed closely behind David, pulling her pink silk robe tight against the sudden chill that seemed to emanate from the hallway. Elena trailed behind them, her face pale, muttering under her breath in a language of pure panic. The hardwood floorboards creaked beneath their hurried footsteps as they rushed toward the guest suite at the end of the long, dimly lit corridor.

The door to the guest room stood slightly ajar. A thin strip of amber light spilled out across the dark floorboards.

David reached out and pushed the door open fully, his eyes sweeping the room. The large mahogany bed was undisturbed. The rocking chair in the corner sat empty, its cushions slightly indented as if someone had just been sitting there. In the center of the room stood the wicker bassinet, draped in delicate white lace.

It was entirely empty. The pale pink baby blanket lay folded neatly across the mattress, completely cold to the touch.

Clara let out a choked, breathless sound and dropped to her knees on the threshold, her fingers clawing at the carpet. "She was just here. I swear to God, she was right here less than an hour ago."

Elena rushed into the room, her green dress swishing frantically as she checked the closet, pulling the sliding doors back with a violent clatter. The closet was empty except for a few wire hangers swinging rhythmically in the draft. "This is impossible," Elena whispered, her hands flying to her mouth. "The security system was armed. Nobody could have gotten into the house without the master code."

David walked over to the bassinet, his gaze dropping to the floor beside it. Resting on the baseboard was a small, unfamiliar object—a silver-plated cufflink embossed with an intricate family crest that neither he nor Elena owned.

Arthur strolled into the room behind them, his face impassive as he looked at the empty bassinet. He picked up the cufflink with two fingers, turning it over in the light.

"Well, well," Arthur murmured, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. "It appears someone else had a key to the estate all along."
