Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The air inside the nursery smelled faintly of lavender and sharp adrenaline. Elena’s fingers remained locked around Clara’s frail arm, pressing just hard enough to leave pale impressions against the younger woman’s trembling skin. Elena’s dark hair was pulled back into a severe bun, every strand anchored in place, matching the rigid, unyielding posture of her emerald-green satin wrap dress. Clara sat hunched inside the empty white wooden crib, her light pink silk robe bunched up around her knees like petals of a bruised flower. The stark white bars of the furniture framed them both in an ironic innocence.

"You don't deserve this child," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, venomous register that cut through the quiet room. Her chest rose and fell with controlled fury.

Clara flinched, her eyes wide with a mixture of exhaustion and terror. "You don't know what you're saying, Elena. Please, let go of me."

"I know everything," Elena hissed, leaning closer, her face inches from Clara’s. "You think you can just walk in here and claim a life you had no hand in creating? You are a fragile ghost, Clara. You’ll break under the weight of motherhood before the month is even over."

From the shadowy hallway, David’s heavy boots scraped against the hardwood floor. He wore a dark burgundy knit sweater that felt stifling in the tense heat of the room. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently near his mouth. He had heard enough.

David lunged forward into the room, his stride eating up the distance in seconds, his eyes fixed entirely on Elena.

"You'll pay for this!" David roared, his voice shaking with a rage that eclipsed Elena’s calculated coldness.

Before Elena could fully turn around, David’s shoulder slammed into her side with brutal momentum. The impact was merciless. Elena lost her footing on the slick wooden edge and crashed hard onto the plush white carpet beside the crib, her green dress twisting around her legs.

From the floor, Elena winced, pressing a hand to her throbbing hip. She looked up, her expression morphing from shock into genuine terror as she thrust a hand outward defensively.

"David! She's not stable!" Elena screamed, pointing a trembling finger at the woman still huddled inside the crib.

David froze mid-stride, his breath catching in his throat as Clara suddenly reached behind the mattress and pulled out a heavy, forgotten medical file.
