Chapter 10 - The Leverage

Standing in the doorway of the boathouse, Julian Vance looked disheveled and frantic, his expensive overcoat soaked through and his dark hair plastered to his forehead. In his left arm, cradled carelessly against his chest, was a small bundle wrapped in a pale pink blanket. In his right hand, he held the rifle steady, its barrel pointed directly toward Clara as she walked slowly down the wooden pier.
"Stop right there, Clara," Julian called out, his voice cracking slightly under the strain of exhaustion and adrenaline. "Don't take another step, or I swear I'll drop the bundle into the tide right now."
Clara stopped instantly, her chest heaving as she fought to control her breathing. The rain soaked her heavy woolen coat and plastered her dark hair to her face, but her eyes remained locked on the pink bundle in Julian’s arms. "She’s just an infant, Julian. She has nothing to do with your feud with the trust."
"She is the entire trust," Julian laughed, a harsh, grating sound that was swallowed by the wind. "The board wrote a special clause into the endowment: if the primary lineage is broken or contested at the midnight hour, the entire portfolio liquidates into my private venture fund. But if I control the child, I control the board."
From the shadows behind Julian, a second figure stepped out onto the porch of the boathouse—a figure none of them had anticipated seeing so far from the city. It was Arthur Vance, holding a black umbrella, looking completely dry and unbothered by the storm.
Clara gasped, stumbling backward on the wet wooden planks of the pier. "Uncle Arthur? You’re... you’re working with him?"
Arthur stepped forward into the yellow light, adjusting his gray trench coat. "I am working for the preservation of the family name, my dear. Julian was simply too impatient. He jumped the gun before we could secure the legal transfers properly."
Julian glared back at Arthur over his shoulder, his grip tightening around the rifle. "Back off, Arthur. I have the child. The leverage is mine."
David finally reached the head of the pier, ignoring the cold and the danger, his eyes fixed entirely on Julian. "Let her go, Julian. Take the papers. Take the house. Take everything."
"I am taking everything, David," Julian smiled coldly. "Starting with your illusion of a family."
Suddenly, a loud engine roar echoed from the access road behind them. Headlights cut through the rain as a second vehicle came tearing around the bend, its tires throwing up mud and gravel in a chaotic spray. The vehicle slammed to a halt, and the passenger door flew open before the car had even finished sliding to a stop.

Elena stepped out into the storm, drenched to the skin, holding a heavy iron tire iron in her right hand. She didn't look at Arthur, and she didn't look at David. Her eyes were fixed entirely on Julian, burning with a wrath that eclipsed them all.
