Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Blood

Julian stood his ground, his fists clenched inside the pockets of his black tuxedo trousers. The chandeliers overhead flickered once, casting dancing shadows across the polished marble floor where the shattered champagne flute still lay.

"If you want revenge against my father, you're too late," Julian said coldly, his voice cutting through the tense air. "Arthur Vance died three months ago. You can't touch him."

Marcus took another slow step forward, his cold gray eyes locking onto Julian with an intensity that made the younger man’s breath hitch. "Oh, I know he's dead, Julian. I watched his funeral from across the street through the lens of a telephoto lens. I saw the tears you shed for a man you thought was a saint. But a grave doesn't absolve a thief of his sins. And it certainly doesn't return thirty years of my life spent rotting in a Canadian maximum-security prison."

"You said you were hiding in Montreal," Eleanor interjected, her voice shaking as she clutched her pearls for dear life. She stepped out from behind Julian, staring at her brother-in-law with a mixture of terror and profound guilt. "Marcus... Arthur told us the federal authorities put you away for corporate espionage. He said you tried to sell our secrets to foreign competitors."

Marcus stopped walking. A dark, dangerous shadow crossed his scarred face, and for a fraction of a second, the veneer of cool composure cracked, revealing the raw, festering fury of a man who had been buried alive.

"That was their masterpiece," Marcus spat, his voice rising in volume, echoing off the ornate walls. "Arthur and Arthur Moreau engineered the entire frame job. They forged my signature on wire transfer documents, hacked into international servers using my workstation, and when the federal net began to close, they locked me in the lab and set the spark. If the night watchman hadn't pulled my unconscious body out of the burning wreckage before the structure collapsed, I would have burned to ash just like they planned."

Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face. He looked down at the Swiss bank receipt on the floor, the numbers suddenly taking on a terrifying, undeniable clarity. His father hadn't just been a partner in the theft; he had been the architect of his own brother’s destruction.

"Why are you here, Marcus?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "If you wanted to destroy us, you could have gone to the press years ago. Why wait until my wedding day? Why orchestrate this elaborate trap with Elena?"

Marcus smiled—a slow, predatory stretching of his lips that reached his eyes this time, filled with malicious satisfaction. "Because destroying a man’s bank accounts isn't enough, Julian. Taking his company isn't enough. To truly destroy a dynasty, you have to strike at its future. I didn't orchestrate Elena’s arrest—the feds did that independently based on documents I leaked to them last week. But I did arrange for Elena to meet you four years ago."

Julian staggered backward, the room spinning around him. "What?"

"I introduced you," Marcus said smoothly, taking a final step forward until he was standing just inches away from his nephew. "I knew Elena’s father. I knew the kind of ruthless, ambitious family she came from. I knew that if I placed her in your path, you would fall in love, you would build an empire together, and on the most important day of your life, the house of cards would collapse in spectacular fashion. And look at you now, Julian—standing alone in a ruined ballroom, surrounded by ghosts and lies."

Before Julian could process the horrifying manipulation, Marcus reached into his overcoat pocket and pulled out a sleek, heavy flash drive. He held it up between two fingers, letting it dangle like a pendulum.

"On this drive," Marcus whispered, his voice dropping to a chilling, confidential tone, "is the unredacted proof of your father’s financial crimes, along with the legal documents transferring every single asset of Vance Enterprises directly into my name. You can fight me in court for the next ten years, Julian, and lose every cent you own... or you can take the drive, sign the transfer papers tonight, and walk away with your life."
