Chapter 10 - The Devil's Bargain

The flash drive swung gently back and forth between Marcus’s fingers, catching the amber light of the chandeliers like a tiny, metallic pendulum measuring out the seconds of Julian’s remaining sanity. The vast banquet hall was dead silent; even the distant hum of the hotel’s air conditioning seemed to fade into nothingness.
Julian stared at the small piece of plastic and metal. It represented the total eradication of everything he had ever known, worked for, and believed in. Vance Enterprises—the global conglomerate his father had supposedly built from the ground up, the company Julian had spent the last eight years sacrificing his youth, his sleep, and his personal life to expand—was nothing more than a stolen throne built on a foundation of ash and treachery.
"If I sign," Julian said slowly, his voice raspy and devoid of all inflection, "what happens to my mother? What happens to our estate, our home, the legacy?"
Marcus lowered his hand, holding the flash drive out toward his nephew, offering it like a poisoned apple. "Your mother keeps her personal trust fund. She can live out her days in that oversized, empty mansion in the suburbs, completely untouched by the fallout. As for you, Julian? You walk away with the clothes on your back—or rather, the tuxedo on your back—and a clean slate. No debt, no federal indictments, and no association with the Moreau cartel."
Eleanor let out a sharp sob, reaching out to grab Julian’s arm. "Don't do it, Julian! Don't give him everything your father worked for! There has to be another way—we can fight him in court, we can—"
"Fight with what money, Sister-in-law?" Marcus interrupted, his voice dripping with icy condescension as he turned his sharp gray eyes toward her. "Every account linked to Vance Enterprises is currently being audited and frozen by the federal investigators. By sunrise tomorrow, the government will seize every corporate asset, every subsidiary, and every real estate holding bearing the Vance name. Your son won't even be able to afford a court-appointed public defender, let alone a high-priced legal defense team."
Julian looked down at his mother, seeing the absolute terror and exhaustion etched deep into her face. The proud, untouchable matriarch of the Vance family was gone, replaced by a broken woman paying the ultimate price for sins committed thirty years before she even married into the name.
He slowly raised his hand and reached out, his fingers closing around the cold plastic body of the flash drive.
Marcus didn't let go immediately. He maintained his grip on the drive, leaning in close until his scarred cheek was inches from Julian’s ear.
"Welcome to the real world, nephew," Marcus whispered softly. "It turns out the sins of the father really do visit the son."
With a sharp jerk, Julian pulled the drive free from his uncle’s grasp. Marcus stepped back, a satisfied, victorious smirk playing across his lips. He reached into his overcoat once more, pulling out a folded document and a gold-plated fountain pen, tossing them carelessly onto the edge of the nearest banquet table.
"The deed of transfer is on page three," Marcus said smoothly, turning around and walking toward the grand double doors without looking back. "Sign it, email the confirmation to the address on the top line before midnight, and consider yourself free. Stay stubborn, and federal marshals will be serving you an arrest warrant before breakfast."
The heavy oak doors pushed open, swallowed Marcus into the dimly lit corridor, and clicked shut once again.
Julian stood frozen in the center of the ruins, the flash drive burning hot against his palm like a live ember. He walked slowly toward the table, his knees feeling like lead, and picked up the gold-plated pen.
Eleanor watched him, her breath hitching in her throat. "Julian... what are you going to do?"
Julian didn't answer right away. He flipped open the document Marcus had left behind, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon until they landed on the signature line at the bottom of page three. He looked up at the empty banquet hall, then down at the ruined wedding dress train pooling on the floor near the sweetheart table.

With a steady, resolute hand, Julian pressed the nib of the pen to the paper and began to write his own name, willingly signing away an empire to break a generational curse.
