Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

Julian stared at the signature at the bottom of the letter—*Arthur Vance*—written with a firm, unwavering hand just weeks before the fatal stroke. The words danced before his eyes, rewriting every memory he had of the past three years. Every romantic dinner, every shared dream of merging their family dynasties, every defense he had mounted against his mother’s quiet warnings—all of it felt like a meticulously orchestrated deception.

"You lied to me about Montreal," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He didn't look at Elena; his eyes remained glued to the page. "You told me you had never even been to Canada."

Elena let out a short, cold laugh that lacked any genuine humor. "People say a lot of things during courtship, Julian. You presented yourself as the brilliant, independent heir to Vance Enterprises. I presented myself as the pristine, untouchable daughter of Moreau Industries. We both played our parts. The only difference is that I was smart enough not to let ghosts ruin a multi-million-dollar empire."

Eleanor pushed past a pair of stunned groomsmen, stepping up beside her son. She pointed a trembling finger at the bride, her face flushed with righteous indignation. "Look at her, Julian! She isn't even denying it! She entrapped you just like her father entrapped your uncle thirty years ago. They steal ideas, they ruin lives, and then they hide behind high-priced lawyers and tailored gowns!"

"Shut up, Eleanor!" Elena barked, finally losing her veneer of icy composure. Her shoulders tensed, and she took a sharp step forward, closing the distance between them. "You’ve hated me from the moment Arthur brought me into the office for the first time. You couldn't stand the thought of a woman younger and sharper than you taking control of the board. This entire ambush was orchestrated by you and your pathetic bitterness, dragging out a dead man’s paranoid ramblings on live television!"

"Live television?" Julian echoed, frowning.

Before Elena could answer, a soft, electronic chime echoed through the grand hall. Several guests in the front rows instinctively reached into their pockets or evening clutches, pulling out glowing smartphones. Murmurs rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass. Heads snapped toward screens, and a collective gasp rose from the assembled elite.

Julian slowly pulled his own phone from the interior pocket of his black tuxedo, keeping one hand clamped tightly around the incriminating letter. He tapped the screen. A major financial news blog had just pushed an urgent push notification with a headline that made his stomach drop into an abyss:

BREAKING: VANCE-MOREAU WEDDING HALTED AMID ALLEGATIONS OF CORPORATE FRAUD; FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS RAID MOREAU HEADQUARTERS.

Julian looked up from his screen, his eyes widening in horror as he met Elena’s gaze. The security guards had stopped moving toward Eleanor; instead, their earpieces were buzzing furiously, and they were staring intently at their own devices.

"Did you leak this?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with disbelief. "Did you leak the raid to cover your tracks?"

Elena’s face went pale—truly pale, for the first time all evening. The sleek bun suddenly looked like a tight knot holding back an avalanche. She opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, the heavy double doors of the banquet hall flew open with a loud bang, revealing three men in dark suits holding federal badges.
