Chapter 13 - The Cuffs of Inheritance

The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists, biting sharply into his skin. The heavy tactical gear of the federal marshals pressed in around him, smelling of leather, rain, and uncompromising authority. The opulence of the grand banquet hall—the towering orchids, the warm amber glow of the chandeliers, the sea of white silk pooling around his satin shoes—now felt like a gilded cage constructed specifically for his destruction.

"You have the right to remain silent," Agent Miller recited mechanically, his voice devoid of any emotion as he guided Julian toward the exit. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Julian didn't fight back. He didn't shout, he didn't protest, and he didn't look back at the ruined reception. His mind was entirely blank, overloaded by the cascading sequence of betrayals that had dismantled his entire existence in less than two hours. He had walked into this hotel as a billionaire heir and a triumphant groom; he was leaving it as a federal prisoner, saddled with decades of criminal liability for crimes committed before he was even born.

Eleanor stumbled forward from the velvet chair, sobbing uncontrollably as she reached out toward her son. "Julian! No! Please, take me instead! He's innocent!"

"Step back, ma'am," one of the tactical marshals instructed firmly, placing a gloved hand on her shoulder to halt her advance.

"Mother, stop!" Julian managed to say, his voice strained and hoarse as he turned his head for a fraction of a second to look at her. "Go home. Pack what you can before the marshals execute the property seizure. Find a lawyer—a real one, not one tied to the firm."

"Mr. Vance," Agent Miller interrupted, guiding Julian sharply toward the heavy double doors. "Let's move."

As they crossed the threshold of the banquet hall and entered the dimly lit marble corridor of the hotel, Julian caught a glimpse of a familiar figure standing near the elevators at the end of the hall.

It was his cousin—the young man from the photograph, the son of Uncle Marcus—dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. He wasn't hiding; he stood openly, leaning casually against the polished wall with his hands in his pockets, watching Julian being hauled away in handcuffs.

As Julian drew closer, his cousin pushed off the wall and stepped into their path, forcing Agent Miller to halt for a brief moment.

The cousin smiled, a cold, calculated expression that bore a chilling resemblance to the family portraits hanging in the Vance estate study. He reached out, gently patting Julian on the shoulder as if congratulating him on a job well done.

"Thank you for signing the papers, cousin," the young man whispered smoothly, his voice carrying just enough for Julian to hear over the hum of the overhead lights. "My father sends his regards. The empire is back where it belongs."

Julian glared at him, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached. "You won't get away with this," Julian hissed through his teeth. "The federal government investigates everything. They'll find out you engineered the entire fraud."

The cousin chuckled softly, stepping back to let the marshals pass. "Investigate what, Julian? Every signature on those documents is yours. You legally assumed all corporate liabilities voluntarily. By the time your lawyers figure out the fine print, my father and I will be sitting on a private island in the Mediterranean, watching Vance Enterprises burn to ash."

Agent Miller shoved Julian forward, bypassing the cousin and marching straight toward the service elevators at the end of the hall. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing a sterile, empty interior waiting to take him down to the basement parking garage where the transport vans were idling in the rain.

As the elevator doors began to close, cutting off his view of the hotel corridor, Julian noticed a small, plain white envelope lying on the floor of the elevator car—the exact same type of envelope his mother had handed him at the altar.

He stared down at it as the metal doors sealed shut around him, plunging the car into temporary, suffocating darkness.
