Chapter 9: The Safe House in the Pines

The rustling canopy of the pine forest swallowed the headlights of the gray van as Major Thomas Vance steered the vehicle down a barely discernible dirt track overgrown with ferns and fallen needles. Two miles off the main highway, nestled deep within the dense timberland of northern Vermont, stood a weathered A-frame cabin wrapped in shadows. The structure looked abandoned, its wooden siding gray and weathered by decades of harsh winters, but the faint plume of woodsmoke rising from the stone chimney told a different story.

Vance killed the engine, letting the van coast silently to a halt beside a rusted tractor half-buried in blackberry bushes.

"We're here," Vance whispered, turning off the headlights. "Safe house zero-four. Nobody has stepped foot on this property since the mid-nineties."

Arthur immediately climbed out of the passenger side and hurried to open the sliding side door. Chloe was curled in a tight ball on the bench seat, her face pale and damp with sweat. Her breathing came in ragged, shallow gasps, and her hand was pressed desperately against her lower abdomen where the surgical scar had begun to bleed through the gauze of her sweatshirt.

"Help me carry her, Tom," Arthur said, his voice urgent as he carefully slid his arms beneath her shoulders and knees.

"Got her," Vance replied, stepping up to take her feet.

Together, they carried Chloe out of the cold night air and up the wooden steps of the cabin. Vance unlocked the heavy reinforced door with an old-fashioned skeleton key, pushing it open to reveal a rustic interior lit by a glowing wood-burning stove and a single kerosene lamp on a wooden table. They laid her gently down on a narrow cot in the corner, covered with heavy wool blankets and sheepskins.

Arthur immediately set to work, pulling a medical kit from his duffel bag—supplies he had smuggled out of the military base years ago. He stripped back Chloe’s sweatshirt, revealing the angry, swollen red line of the surgical incision. Two of the inner stitches had indeed torn loose, and a small dark stain was spreading across the white bandage.

"The internal tissue is tearing," Arthur said, his hands steady despite the rising panic in his chest. "She’s developing an infection from the stress and the travel."

Vance stepped over, holding a bottle of high-proof whiskey and a roll of sterile gauze. "You’re going to have to re-suture it, Arthur. Right here, right now, without anesthesia."

Chloe opened her eyes, looking up at her father with absolute trust etched into her exhausted features. She nodded faintly, biting her lower lip to prepare for the agony to come.

"Do it, Dad," she whispered. "Make sure... make sure they never get it."
