Chapter 10: The Agony of the Cut

The flickering yellow light of the kerosene lamp cast long, dancing shadows across the rough wooden walls of the cabin. The wood-burning stove crackled softly in the corner, providing a stark contrast to the freezing draft seeping through the floorboards. Arthur stood beside the narrow cot, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hands were scrubbed clean with antiseptic, but they trembled slightly—not from fear, but from the unbearable weight of what he had to do to his own flesh and blood.

Chloe lay with her fists clenched tightly into the sheepskin blanket, her knuckles stark white. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps, her eyes fixed on the timber ceiling as if searching for an escape from the pain awaiting her.

"Drink this, sweetheart," Vance said gently, holding a small tin cup of raw whiskey to her lips.

Chloe swallowed a small sip, coughing as the burning liquid hit her throat, but it took the sharpest edge off her terror. She nodded to her father, signaling that she was ready.

Arthur picked up the curved surgical needle threaded with sterile nylon. He dipped the metal tip into an antiseptic solution, taking a deep, steadying breath to center himself. He had patched up wounded soldiers under enemy fire countless times, but none of them bore his own blood, none of them carried the unbearable burden of a secret that could tear nations apart.

"I'm sorry, Chloe," Arthur murmured, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm so sorry."

He pressed the needle through the inflamed skin just above the jagged surgical scar. Chloe let out a sharp, choked gasp, arching her back off the cot as a wave of pure agony tore through her abdomen. Her fingers dug deep into the wool blankets, tearing the fabric, but she did not scream. She swallowed her cries, remembering her father’s earlier warning that sound traveled far in the silent forest.

Arthur worked with mechanical precision, his hands moving with practiced speed despite the tears blurring his vision. Every stitch he pulled felt like a knot tightening around his own heart. Vance stood nearby, shining a flashlight directly onto the wound and offering a steadying hand whenever Chloe’s body convulsed from the pain.

"Almost done, kid," Vance muttered encouragingly, wiping the sweat from his own forehead. "Just two more knots. You're stronger than they are."

After what felt like an eternity, Arthur tied off the final knot and snipped the excess thread with a pair of surgical scissors. He applied a fresh, sterile dressing over the incision, securing it firmly with medical tape.

Chloe collapsed back against the pillow, completely limp and exhausted, her skin ashen and wet with cold perspiration. She had survived the procedure, but the danger was far from over. The physical trauma was a mere symptom of the wider conspiracy closing in around them.
