Chapter 12: Dawn at the Border

The first pale gray light of dawn filtered through the frosted windowpanes of the cabin, casting long, frigid shadows across the wooden floor. The fire in the wood stove had burned down to a bed of glowing red embers, leaving the air inside the room biting and cold. Arthur stood by the window, peering through a crack in the curtains toward the tree line, his service pistol holstered securely at his side.
Chloe stirred on the cot, letting out a low moan as she tried to sit up. The new stitches pulled against her abdomen, but the fever had broken during the night, leaving her skin cool and pale.
"Easy, sweetheart," Arthur said, walking over quickly to help her prop herself up against the wooden headboard. "How do you feel?"
"Like I got run over by a truck," Chloe whispered with a faint, tired smile. "But the burning... the burning inside has stopped."
Major Thomas Vance walked over, holding the small black induction reader with its blinking blue LED light. He placed it gently on the edge of the cot. "Good, because we don't have much time. The local forestry service runs patrols through this ridge every Tuesday morning. We need to complete the transfer and get moving before the sun clears the tree line."
Chloe looked down at her sweatshirt, then up at her father. "You're going to take the drive out?"
"Not take it out," Arthur explained, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "Tom is going to download the encryption keys and wipe the memory remotely using this scanner. Once the data is neutralized, the device inside you is just harmless silicon. No one will ever have a reason to hunt you again."
Chloe nodded slowly, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. "Do it."
Vance pressed the flat, circular end of the magnetic scanner gently against the skin just above Chloe’s surgical scar. The blue LED light flickered rapidly, turning from blue to amber as it established a connection with the sub-dermal unit. A faint, high-pitched whirring sound filled the quiet room.
"Connection established," Vance muttered, his eyes fixed on the small digital screen on the reader. "Downloading decryption sequence... twenty percent... forty percent..."

Outside the cabin, the distant crack of a dry twig snapping echoed through the quiet forest.
Arthur froze, his hand dropping instantly to the grip of his pistol. He signaled silently to Vance to keep the transfer going while he moved toward the heavy wooden door, slipping the latch open just a fraction of an inch to peer out into the gray mist of the timberland.
