Chapter 11: The Secret in the Code

While Chloe drifted into an exhausted, feverish sleep under the heavy wool blankets, Arthur and Major Thomas Vance sat by the crackling wood stove at the other end of the cabin. The kerosene lamp hissed quietly, casting a warm glow over Vance’s weathered face as he unfolded a topographical map of the northern border region across the scarred wooden table.

"We cross the ridge at Devil's Pass tomorrow at dawn," Vance whispered, tracing a red grease pencil along a winding trail that avoided all established checkpoints. "The Canadian contact will meet us at the old logging station on the other side. From there, you're out of their jurisdiction."

Arthur stared into the flames of the stove, his thoughts lingering on the small electronic data unit safely concealed beneath Chloe’s newly stitched skin. "They won't stop at the border, Tom. You know how the agency operates. If they realize what went missing in Geneva, they'll burn every asset they have to recover it."

"Then we make sure they never find out what happened to the package," Vance replied quietly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy black box with a flickering blue LED light—a data reader he had salvaged from his own days in deep cover. "Before we cross, we need to extract the encryption key from Chloe’s implant. If we leave it buried inside her indefinitely, the localized inflammation is going to kill her anyway, border patrol or no border patrol."

Arthur stiffened, his head snapping up to lock eyes with his old friend. "Extract it? You mean surgically remove the unit here, in a cabin in the woods?"

"I mean download the decryption protocol so we can transmit the data to a safe server and destroy the physical drive," Vance corrected firmly. "It’s the only way to save her life and keep the intelligence out of the wrong hands permanently. Once the data is uploaded, the unit inside her becomes useless scrap metal, and the agency loses all incentive to hunt her down."

Arthur rubbed his temples, feeling a splitting headache throbbing behind his eyes. "And how do we access the interface without specialized medical equipment?"

Vance tapped the black box on the table. "I built this rig myself during my last year in Berlin. It uses a localized magnetic induction scanner to read the drive through the skin tissue without requiring a full incision. But it’s risky, Arthur. If the signal drops halfway through the transfer, it could trigger a localized thermal burn."

Arthur looked across the room toward the dark corner where Chloe slept fitfully, her breathing heavy and uneven. He stood up from the table, walking silently to the side of her cot. He placed his hand gently on her forehead, feeling the lingering heat of the fever. She had already suffered enough for a lifetime of secrets she never asked to carry.

"We wait until morning," Arthur said softly, returning to the table. "Let her body rest. Then we finish this."
