Chapter 8: Crossing the Perimeter

The gray van surged forward, its tires squealing against the polished concrete as Major Thomas Vance whipped the steering wheel hard to the left, ramming through the partially opened security gate with a sharp crunch of splintering fiberglass. The alarm bells began to wail overhead, flashing a dull red strobe across the asphalt of the hospital parking ramp, but within seconds, they were swallowed by the sprawling anonymity of the city streets.

In the passenger seat, Arthur let out a long, ragged breath, resting his elbow on the window frame while keeping a watchful eye on the rearview mirror. Behind them, no pursuit vehicles had yet emerged from the loading bay.

"That was too close," Vance muttered, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly as he navigated the evening commuter traffic. "They’ll have roadblocks up within the hour once that guard calls in the code red."

"We bypass the main interstate," Arthur replied, his voice steady. "Take Route 9 through the valley. It’s older, less monitored, and leads straight into the timberlands near the northern border."

Chloe sat in the back of the van, huddled under a spare wool blanket Vance had tossed onto the bench seat. The exertion of the escape had taken a heavy toll on her body; beads of cold sweat dotted her forehead, and her breathing was shallow and rapid. She pulled the blanket tight around her waist, applying gentle pressure to the surgical scar that throbbed with a persistent, burning pain.

"Dad," Chloe called out softly, her voice trembling in the dim interior of the moving van. "The pain... it’s getting worse. I think something shifted."

Arthur turned around immediately, kneeling on his seat to reach back toward her. He placed a cool, steady hand against her forehead, feeling the feverish heat radiating from her skin. "Hang on, sweetheart. We're going to find a safe house. Tom, how far to the cabin?"

"Forty miles," Vance said, his eyes scanning the road ahead. "If we maintain speed, we can make it before midnight. But if her stitches ruptured, she needs a doctor, Arthur. Not a safe house in the woods."

"No civilian doctors," Arthur said firmly, his jaw setting into a hard line. "You know what happens if they x-ray her abdomen and find the unit. We keep moving."

Chloe gripped her father's wrist with surprising strength, her tear-filled eyes searching his face in the dashboard glow. "Dad... if I don't make it across, you have to take it out. You can't let them have the data. Promise me."

"Don't talk like that," Arthur ordered gently, though his heart hammered against his ribs like a war drum. "We are going to make it."
