Chapter 2: The Fracture Within

Arthur gently pulled the door shut behind him, cutting off the rhythmic clicking of his mother's heels in the hallway. The sudden hush of room 412 felt suffocating. He walked over to the bedside table, where a plastic tray held untouched chicken soup and a small paper cup of water. Chloe lay curled on her side under the rough blue blanket, her long brown hair tangled across the white pillow. Her face was pale, stained with tears, and her breathing came in shallow, panicked gasps.
Arthur pulled a metal folding chair close to the mattress and sat down. He carefully placed his heavy, calloused hand over Chloe’s trembling fingers, which clutched the edge of the blanket as if anchoring herself to reality.
"Dad..." Chloe whispered, her voice cracking with exhaustion and terror. Her tear-filled eyes looked up at him, pleading for reassurance he was not sure he could give.
Arthur squeezed her hand gently, his thumb brushing against her wrist. He kept his tone soft, stripped of the military bark he used in the field. "What are you afraid of, sweetheart? Tell me."
Chloe closed her eyes tightly, a fresh tear escaping down her cheek. "She almost found it, Dad. When they checked my vitals... the nurse almost pulled the blanket all the way down. If Grandma sees the scar... if anyone finds out what is really underneath..."
"No one is going to see anything," Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "I am here. Nobody touches that blanket without my permission."

Chloe opened her eyes, staring at the ceiling as if reliving a nightmare. "The doctors think it is just a routine appendectomy gone wrong. They sewed me back up and wrote their reports. But we know what they put inside me. We know why this incision was necessary."
Arthur looked down at her abdomen, hidden safely beneath the heavy wool. The surgical scar was fresh, angry, and pink, but it was merely the superficial camouflage for something far more dangerous. He felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. The military tribunal had ended months ago, but the consequences of his final classified assignment were still hunting them. He had protected his daughter across foreign battlefields, but now the battle was taking place in a sterile civilian hospital, and the enemy was closer than ever.
