Chapter 6

Midnight falls over the estate like a heavy velvet shroud, muting the manicured gardens and casting long, skeletal shadows across the terrace. Inside the grand hallway, the grandfather clock ticks with agonizing slowness. Daniel, Clara, and Martha move like ghosts through the darkened corridors, their footsteps silenced by thick runners of Persian carpet. Clara wears a dark sweater borrowed from Martha, her royal blue dress having been burned in the basement incinerator to destroy the physical evidence of the struggle. Daniel carries a heavy iron fireplace poker, not for violence, but for leverage should they encounter a locked door or an overzealous guard.
Martha leads the way up the grand circular staircase, her fingers brushing the ornate wooden banister she has dusted a thousand times. They reach the landing of the third floor, a restricted zone where Evelyn keeps her private archives and personal sanctuary. The air here smells faintly of expensive sandalwood and old paper. A single security camera swings slowly back and forth at the end of the hallway, its red lens blinking rhythmically in the gloom.
"The blind spot is right beneath the molding," Martha whispers, gesturing for Daniel and Clara to hug the wall closely. "We have twenty seconds between sweeps."
Daniel counts the rhythm in his head, his hand steadying Clara as they slip past the lens and into the deep shadow of an arched alcove. They stop in front of a heavy, reinforced mahogany door bearing a brass plaque that reads Private - Authorized Personnel Only. This is Evelyn’s sanctum, the nerve center of her financial empire and the place where all her darkest secrets are cataloged.

Martha produces a small metal pick from her pocket, sliding it into the complex electronic lock system. "I spent two years watching the security consultant service this panel," she murmurs, her brow furrowing with intense concentration. "The override code is tied to your father’s birth date, Mr. Daniel. Evelyn is arrogant enough to use it as her primary encryption key."
With a soft electronic chime, the green light on the door panel flashes. The heavy lock disengages with a mechanical thud that sounds like a gunshot in the silent hallway. Daniel pushes the door open, revealing a room illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through massive skylights overhead. Rows of filing cabinets and a sleek mahogany desk dominate the space, holding the keys to their freedom.
