Chapter 3

With a final, agonizing heave, Daniel and Martha haul Clara over the balcony railing and onto the safety of the stone deck. Clara collapses instantly, curling into a tight ball in her ruined royal blue dress, gasping for air as dry sobs wrack her thin frame. Martha falls backward against the railing, her chest heaving as she inspects her shredded, bleeding palms, tears of relief and trauma spilling down her cheeks. Daniel stands over his wife, shielding her body with his own as he casts a murderous glare toward his mother. Evelyn stands a few feet away, her arms crossed over her dark blue top, her expression a mix of bitter defeat and seething resentment.

"This isn't over," Evelyn murmurs, her voice icy and steady. "You think you’ve won, Daniel? You’ve just signed your own financial death warrant. And hers."

Clara looks up from the ground, her red hair tangled across her face, sticking to her damp forehead. She reaches out a trembling hand to touch Daniel’s beige polo shirt, drawing comfort from his presence, though the terror in her eyes has not faded. She knows Evelyn never backs down when cornered. The estate, financed by ruthless corporate maneuvers and hidden debts, is Evelyn’s kingdom, and they are merely trespassing peasants in her eyes. Daniel helps Clara to her feet, his arm locked firmly around her waist as he leads her away from the pool area and toward the back entrance of the house.

Martha remains behind on the balcony for a moment, gathering the discarded length of thick rope. Her mind races with the implications of what she has just done. She is only a maid, hired to clean marble floors and polish silver, yet she has just actively thwarted the matriarch of the household. She knows her job is gone, but something deeper tells her that her very life might now be in jeopardy. Evelyn walks slowly past Martha, her shoulder brushing against the young woman’s arm with deliberate menace.

"Clean this up, Martha," Evelyn whispers, her tone dangerously calm. "And remember your place, or you’ll be sharing the pool with her next time."
