Chapter 12

True to the dispatcher's word, a pair of bright red and blue strobe lights cuts through the darkness down the highway shoulder less than four minutes later. A marked state trooper cruiser slows down smoothly, its tires crunching on the loose gravel as it pulls directly up to the concrete culvert where Daniel, Clara, and Martha stand. The passenger door swings open, and a tall, broad-shouldered trooper steps out with his hand resting casually, yet cautiously, on his holstered service weapon.

"Mr. Vance?" the trooper asks, shining a heavy flashlight beam toward the ground before raising it to illuminate Daniel’s face.

"I'm Daniel Vance," Daniel answers, stepping forward into the light with his hands held visibly open at his sides. "This is my wife Clara, and this is Martha."

The trooper takes in the scene—Clara’s shivering frame, Martha’s torn uniform and bandaged hands, and the unmistakable tension radiating from all three of them. He relaxes his hand away from his weapon, immediately recognizing that this is no ordinary domestic dispute. He opens the rear door of the cruiser. "Get inside, all of you. Lock the doors behind you. We’ve already received an automated dispatch alert from the local sheriff's department stating that Evelyn Vance’s private security detail has reported a break-in at the estate."

"They're covering their tracks," Martha says sharply as she slides into the back seat beside Clara, pulling the heavy door shut with a satisfying thud. "Evelyn will claim we broke in to steal from her safe."

The trooper climbs back into the driver's seat, his fingers flying across the dashboard terminal as he punches in confirmation codes. "She can claim whatever she wants once the state attorney general's office executes the search warrants," the trooper replies grimly, shifting the cruiser into drive and pulling back onto the highway with a powerful surge of acceleration. "We intercepted a radio transmission from her private security team thirty seconds ago. They were directed to converge on this exact highway stretch."

As the cruiser accelerates northward toward the safety of the federal district offices, the red and blue lights paint the interior of the car in flashing crimson and azure tones. Clara rests her head against the cool glass of the window, watching the dark highway blur past. For the first time since the rope slipped beneath the midday sun, the suffocating weight in her chest begins to lift, replaced by the quiet, steady pulse of a future reclaimed.
