Chapter 2

Martha’s palms bleed where the thick hemp rope bites into her flesh, yet she refuses to loosen her grip. Down below, Clara swings slightly like a broken pendulum over the turquoise water, her royal blue dress fluttering in the artificial breeze kicked up by the estate’s ventilation system. The fabric of Clara’s gown is stained with dirt from the balcony floor where the scuffle began minutes earlier. Inside the air-conditioned sunroom, Daniel steps past the large framed map on the wall, his chest heaving as he glares at his mother. Evelyn’s face has hardened from screaming into a mask of cold, terrifying calculation. She straightens her posture, adjusting the dark blue top she wears, attempting to regain a semblance of elite composure even as her cruel demands hang heavily in the air.

"She is destroying everything your father built, Daniel!" Evelyn spits out the words, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper that carries across the open deck. "That child will tie our name to a scandal we can never wash away. Let the maid drop her. It’s an accident. A tragic, clumsy accident."

Daniel’s face turns pale with a sickening realization. He looks at his mother not with filial respect, but with absolute disgust. He realizes that Evelyn’s ambition has completely devoured her humanity. He turns his back on her, throwing his weight against the heavy sliding glass door, forcing it open with a metallic crash that startles Martha on the balcony. Martha glances over her shoulder, her eyes darting between Daniel and the plummeting drop beneath Clara. The sheer physical strain is pushing Martha past her limits, her brown hair beginning to pull free from its neat bun, framing her sweat-streaked face.

"Mr. Daniel, help me pull!" Martha cries out, her voice cracking under the immense pressure. "I can't hold her weight much longer by myself!"

Daniel lunges forward, grabbing the thick rope just below Martha’s bleeding hands. Together, they heave upward, fighting against the downward pull of gravity and Evelyn’s ongoing curses. Evelyn lunges toward them, her manicured hands clawing at Daniel’s shoulders to pull him away, but Daniel elbows her back with a fierce, protective fury. The fragile illusion of domestic peace shatters completely, leaving only raw survival instincts in its wake.
