Chapter 1

The blue water of the backyard swimming pool ripples beneath Clara, catching the harsh midday sun of an estate built on fragile lies. Hanging by a heavy industrial rope, her fingers lose their grip on the hemp fibers as gravity threatens to drag her down into the concrete edge. Above her on the iron-railed balcony, the chaos unfolds with terrifying precision. The young maid, Martha, with her hair pinned into a severe bun, strains every muscle in her forearms, her knuckles turning bone-white as she anchors the rope against the stone balustrade. Martha’s breath comes in ragged gasps, her lungs burning from exertion and fear.

Inside the sunroom, behind towering glass panels, Daniel stands in his beige polo shirt, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitches near his temple. His fists are balled into tight hammers, ready to shatter the glass if Martha loses her footing. Across from him, his mother, Evelyn, leans over the wrought-iron railing with a face distorted by raw, unbridled malice. Saliva flecks Evelyn’s lips as she shrieks for Martha to let go of the rope, her golden hair catching the wind like a halo of malice. Evelyn’s voice cuts through the warm afternoon air like broken glass, demanding the elimination of the threat below.

Clara looks up, her eyes wide with a terror that goes far beyond the immediate physical danger. She knows Evelyn’s hatred isn’t a momentary loss of temper; it is a calculated vendetta designed to protect the family fortune at any human cost. Daniel’s shout echoes against the patio stones, reminding everyone of the innocent life hanging in the balance. Martha, caught in the terrifying crossfire between a ruthless matriarch and a desperate husband, realizes that letting go means murder, but holding on might cost them all their freedom. The tension thickens, transforming a luxurious suburban backyard into a high-stakes arena of moral reckoning. As Martha digs her heels into the terrace tiles, the rope slips another crucial inch, sending a fresh wave of panic through Clara's trembling frame. The silence of the surrounding neighborhood only amplifies the horror, making every breath feel heavy and dangerous.
