Chapter 13

Dawn breaks over the city skyline, painting the towering glass facades of the federal district attorney’s office in brilliant shades of amber and rose. The state police cruiser pulls smoothly into the secure subterranean parking garage, escorted by two additional patrol units that fell in behind them at the county line. Daniel, Clara, and Martha step out of the vehicle into the sterile, fluorescent-lit concrete garage, greeted by a pair of federal investigators wearing dark suits and federal badges hanging from their lapels.
"Mr. Vance? I'm Special Agent Miller," the lead investigator says, shaking Daniel’s hand firmly before turning his attention to Clara. "We’ve already initiated the raid on the Maple Ridge estate based on the preliminary data signatures you transmitted from the cruiser terminal. Your mother’s security detail surrendered without firing a shot once the state tactical team secured the perimeter."
Clara exhales a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders dropping as the final remnants of terror finally wash away. "And Evelyn?" she asks, her voice steady and clear.
"Evelyn Vance is currently in custody, being transported to the federal holding facility downtown," Agent Miller replies, a faint smile touching his lips. "The forensic accountants are already tearing through her digital archives. The forged will, the financial transfers, the medical logs—it’s all there, down to the last dollar. She won't be seeing daylight outside a courtroom anytime soon."

Martha stands quietly off to the side, clutching the edge of her torn maid's uniform. Agent Miller turns to her, his expression softening with professional respect. "And you must be Martha. The state attorney general's office wants to offer you full witness protection and a permanent position within the state administrative division once your testimony is on record. You saved two lives yesterday."
Martha looks at Daniel and Clara, who both nod warmly, their eyes shining with deep, enduring gratitude. A quiet sense of peace settles over Martha’s features, replacing the anxiety that has defined her existence for the past two years. "I don't need protection, Agent Miller," Martha says softly, a small, genuine smile breaking across her face. "I just want a fresh start where no one tells me when to pull the rope."
