Chapter 8

The guard moved with terrifying speed, closing the distance across the Persian rug before Elena could even draw a full breath. His black leather-gloved hand shot out, grabbing her wrist with a grip like a vice. The flash drive was still halfway through its transfer sequence, sitting at 91%, pulsing with a desperate amber light.

"Step away from the terminal," the guard ordered, his voice devoid of any emotion, purely mechanical in its execution of orders.

"Let me go!" Elena cried out, twisting her arm violently in an attempt to break free. The sharp edges of her silver bracelet scraped against his glove, but his grip remained unyielding. With his free hand, he reached down toward the matte-black holster at his hip, unsnapping the leather retention strap with a sharp click.

A wave of cold dread washed over Elena. She realized with absolute clarity that Arthur had given them orders far more absolute than mere containment. If this file finished uploading, she would be eliminated before midnight, and her death would be ruled an unfortunate accidental fall from the estate's balcony.

"You're too late," Elena gasped, staring defiantly into the guard's cold, blank eyes. "The core files are already routed."

The guard paused for a fraction of a second, glancing down at the computer screen. The progress bar hit 99%. With a final, triumphant chime from the speakers, the terminal flashed a notification: Transfer Complete. Secure Packet Dispatched.

Without hesitation, the guard raised his hand, intending to strike her across the face and knock her unconscious. But before his blow could land, the heavy study door swung completely open, revealing Arthur Vance standing on the threshold, flanked by two more guards. His face was pale, his breathing shallow, and the gold tie around his neck was slightly askew.

"Stop," Arthur commanded, his voice strained and breathless. He stepped into the room, his eyes darting frantically from Elena to the glowing computer monitor. "What... what has she done?"

The guard holding Elena lowered his hand slightly, releasing his grip just enough for her to yank her arm free. "She completed a data transfer, sir. The central ledger has been dispatched to an external node."

Arthur stared at the screen in absolute horror. The mask of calm invincibility had entirely shattered, leaving behind the desperate, cornered visage of a man whose empire had just been pulled out from under him.
