Chapter 11

The heavy silence in the study grew oppressive, thick with mutual distrust and impending ruin. Arthur Vance stared at Elena, his chest rising and falling in shallow, agitated breaths. The polished veneer of the untouchable patriarch had entirely vanished, replaced by the raw desperation of a cornered animal.
"You will authorize the decryption key right now," Arthur demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding whisper as he closed the distance between them. "You think you can hold me hostage with your little digital parlor trick? My guards are still outside this door. I can make your disappearance permanent before midnight, encrypted files or no encrypted files."
Elena didn't flinch. She stood her ground against the bookshelf, her fingers pressing into the hidden leather pouch still concealed beneath her dress. "If I die tonight, Arthur, the master decryption key automatically transmits to the Department of Justice via a cloud-based failsafe. I programmed it an hour before I confronted you in the ballroom. You kill me, and you sign your own immediate death warrant."
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks. His hand hovered inches from his lapel where he usually kept a concealed panic button. He realized with chilling clarity that he had underestimated her intelligence at every single turn. She was no longer the helpless orphan he had pulled from the lower districts; she was a worthy adversary who had outmaneuvered him on his own turf.
"We can make an arrangement," Arthur said, his tone shifting abruptly into one of calculated negotiation. The transformation was sickeningly smooth, born of decades spent brokering corrupt backroom deals. "Drop the charges, hand over the private key, and I will transfer a substantial equity stake in Vance Industries to an offshore account in your name. You can leave the country tonight. Paris, Geneva, wherever you choose. You will live like royalty for the rest of your days."
Elena looked at him with profound disgust. "You think my silence can be bought with the very stolen money you built this empire on? That is your fatal flaw, Arthur. You believe everyone has a price."
"Everyone does," Arthur insisted, his eyes narrowing. "You just haven't named yours yet."
"My price is your complete and total accountability," Elena said firmly. "I am not walking away with blood money, and I am not letting you drag me down as your co-conspirator. We are going to walk out those doors together, and you are going to confess to the federal prosecutor currently attending your gala downstairs."

Arthur let out a harsh, barking laugh that held no humor. "You expect me to walk downstairs and hand myself over to a federal magistrate? Have you completely lost your mind?"
"Alternative is worse," Elena replied quietly, lifting her chin. "The gala is ending soon, Arthur. Your guests are finishing their champagne. Shall we go down together, or shall I make the phone call right here?"
