Chapter 13

The crystal chandelier hummed softly overhead as Arthur Vance gripped the polished wooden banister of the grand staircase. The gathered elites of the city stood in hushed anticipation, waiting for the customary corporate toast that always concluded the Vance family's annual gala. Instead, the heavy silence stretched out, pregnant with an unspoken dread.

"My friends," Arthur began, his voice surprisingly steady, though lacking its usual booming arrogance. He looked out over the sea of expensive suits and glittering evening gowns. "For decades, we have celebrated the prosperity of Vance Industries as a beacon of progress and unwavering strength."

Elena watched him closely, her thumb resting firmly on the transmission switch in her pocket. She could see the immense physical toll the confession was taking on him; his shoulders were hunched slightly beneath the bespoke dark suit, and the gold tie seemed to choke him.

"However," Arthur continued, pausing to swallow hard, "true strength requires acknowledging our deepest failures. Tonight, I must confess that the foundation of our success was built upon systemic deception, illicit asset concealment, and the deliberate silencing of those who sought the truth."

A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. Shocked glances were exchanged among the bankers and politicians standing near the base of the stairs. The advisor who had greeted them earlier stepped forward, his smile entirely vanished. "Arthur, what on earth are you talking about? Have you lost your senses?"

"I have never been more lucid, David," Arthur replied, his eyes locking onto the faces of the stunned men before him. He turned his head slightly toward Elena, acknowledging her quiet, unyielding presence beside him. "For years, I placed my ambition above the law, above ethics, and above the very people I swore to protect. And for that, I take full and complete responsibility."

A federal prosecutor, attending the gala as an uninvited guest of a junior magistrate, stepped out from the murmuring crowd, his expression hardening into professional alertness. He reached inside his jacket, pulling out his identification badge. "Arthur Vance, I am Special Agent Miller of the federal financial crimes division. You are required by law to accompany me immediately."

The two guards in black suits instantly stiffened, their hands tightening around their holsters as they took a sharp step forward toward the staircase.

"Stand down," Arthur commanded sharply, raising a hand to stop them. He looked at the federal agent and extended his wrists voluntarily. "I will go quietly."
