Chapter 4

The melodic chime of the foyer clock striking seven served as a jarring reminder of the outside world pressing in upon their isolated confrontation. Arthur’s eyes darted toward the heavy oak doors, calculating the narrow window of time before his high-society associates began wandering toward the ballroom. A public scandal at this precise juncture would plummet Vance Industries stock before morning trading commenced.
"We are not finished here," Arthur whispered fiercely, leaning in close enough for Elena to catch the faint scent of expensive bourbon and cedarwood. "Fix your dress. Wipe the tears from your face. When those doors open, you will play the dutiful ward, or I promise you, the consequences will extend far beyond yourself."
Elena straightened her posture, lifting her chin with quiet defiance. She carefully smoothed the dark blue fabric over her shoulders, masking the trembling of her hands. "I will play whatever part keeps me breathing long enough to see you fall, Arthur."
Arthur’s jaw tightened, but he offered a tight, chilling smile meant to simulate familial warmth for any potential observer. He signaled the guards with a sharp, downward chop of his hand. Instantly, the two men in black suits melted back into the deeper shadows near the marble pillars, their postures remaining rigidly alert, hands still dangerously close to their holsters.
The heavy brass handle of the grand double doors began to turn with a metallic creak. Arthur turned smoothly on his heel, adjusting his gold tie with practiced grace, transforming his demeanor from a cornered predator into a benevolent patriarch welcoming his guests.
Elena took a deep, steadying breath, filling her lungs with the chilled air. As the doors swung open, the bright, dazzling lights of the outer foyer spilled into the dimly lit ballroom, temporarily blinding her. Through the glare, the silhouette of Senator Vance’s chief advisor appeared on the threshold, stepping forward with a wide, superficial smile.

"Good evening, Arthur," the advisor called out, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "The governor has just arrived, and he is most anxious to speak with you regarding the waterfront development contract."
"Thank you, David," Arthur replied smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless warmth that completely belied the venom of moments before. He extended a hand toward Elena, his fingers curling around her arm with a punishing, hidden grip that threatened to bruise. "And allow me to present my dear ward, Elena, who is simply breathless with anticipation for tonight’s festivities."
