Chapter 7

The study was bathed in the pale, ethereal glow of moonlight streaming through arched stained-glass windows. Rows of leather-bound volumes lined the mahogany bookshelves, smelling faintly of old paper and polished leather. Elena moved quickly across the Persian rug to the sprawling oak desk where Arthur’s primary terminal sat in sleep mode, casting a faint amber standby light.
She tapped the keyboard. The screen flickered to life, demanding an administrator password. Her fingers hovered over the mechanical keys. She closed her eyes, visualizing Arthur’s rigid posture, recalling the complex string of alphanumeric characters he muttered during a conference call weeks ago—a sequence based on the founding date of his first fraudulent shell corporation and his late wife’s birthday.
She typed the sequence rapidly: Vance1984#Estelle.
The screen flashed green. A secure desktop interface materialized, displaying files labeled with cryptic project codes, offshore account balances, and encrypted communications with government regulators. Elena inserted a small flash drive into the USB port, immediately initiating the data transfer protocol she had pre-configured. A progress bar appeared on the screen, crawling forward at an agonizingly slow pace. 12%... 18%... 25%...
Outside the heavy mahogany door, a firm, metallic knock rattled the frame.
"Miss Vance," a deep, flat voice called out—the guard. "Open the door immediately."
Elena ignored him, watching the progress bar tick upward. 45%... 52%...
"I am authorized to use physical force if necessary," the guard warned, his voice harder this time. A heavy thud struck the oak door, followed by the grinding sound of a lock being tested with a heavy-duty tool.

"Hurry, please, just finish," Elena whispered frantically to the screen, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. 71%... 80%...
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed as the reinforced latch gave way. The heavy door swung inward, splintering at the hinges. The muscular guard in the black suit stepped into the study, his eyes instantly locking onto Elena standing behind the desk, the monitor's glow reflecting sharply in her wide eyes.
