Chapter 10

The realization hit Elena like a physical blow. She staggered back against the bookshelf, her fingers gripping the edge of a mahogany shelf for balance. Arthur watched her reaction with cold satisfaction, regaining a fraction of his former composure as he straightened his dark suit jacket.

"Checkmate, my dear," Arthur murmured softly, walking toward the window to look out over the glittering gardens where guests were still laughing and drinking beneath the amber lanterns. "You wanted justice so badly. Now you get to experience its full, unyielding weight right alongside me."

"You manipulated me from the very beginning," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with horror and betrayal. "You planned this. Even if I exposed you, you engineered an escape hatch that dragged me down with you."

"Survival requires foresight, Elena," Arthur replied without turning around. "I always anticipate every possible variable, including my own subordinates turning against me. That is why I am sitting at the top, and why you are merely a footnote in my history."

Outside in the hallway, the muted murmur of the gala drifted upward, a surreal reminder of the glittering facade continuing outside while their world collapsed in the shadows. Elena’s mind raced frantically, searching for a flaw in Arthur’s logic, a loophole in the corporate structure she had unknowingly signed away.

"There is always a way out of a cage," Elena said, her voice hardening as resolve replaced her panic.

Arthur turned back from the window, raising an eyebrow skeptically. "Oh? And what brilliant legal maneuver do you propose from a jail cell? The federal indictments are automated; they execute within the hour based on the dead-man's switch you so proudly boasted about earlier."

"They execute with my biometric authentication," Elena corrected him, her eyes locking onto his. "The switch requires my authorization code to release the final decryption key. The files I sent are encrypted with a private key that only I possess."

Arthur’s expression froze. The color drained entirely from his face for the second time that evening. "You lied about the automatic dispatch."

"I learned from the best," Elena replied coldly. "The files are sitting in limbo on a secure external server. Without my fingerprint and my voiceprint, the encryption holds indefinitely. The authorities receive only a locked archive until I authorize the release."

The power dynamic shifted instantly back across the Persian rug. Arthur took a slow, threatening step forward, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. For the first time, genuine panic flared in his eyes.
