Chapter 8

Stepping back out into the quiet evening courtyard, Julian found Sarah and Lily sitting peacefully by the fountain. The chaotic noise of the reception hall was now entirely muffled behind the heavy doors, replaced by the gentle splashing of water and the rustle of evening leaves. Lily looked up as Julian approached, her tear-streaked face lighting up with a hesitant smile. She stood up, smoothing down her white dress and clutching her pearl-strap handbag. Sarah watched Julian carefully, searching his face for signs of defeat or anger, but found only a profound, grounded calm.

"It's over," Julian said simply, stopping a few feet away from them. He offered a tired, genuine smile. "The wedding is canceled. The marriage didn't even survive the night." Sarah raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms again, though the defensive hostility had largely evaporated from her posture. "And let me guess: you lost your society friends, your fancy connections, and probably your position in the firm," Sarah noted, stating the obvious consequences of his abrupt decision with blunt honesty. Julian nodded slowly. "I lost all of it. And honestly, it feels like I finally got my life back."

Lily ran forward and threw her arms around Julian’s waist, burying her face in his jacket. Julian wrapped his arms around her, lifting her up easily. The warm, grounding weight of his daughter felt like the only real thing in a world that had just turned upside down. Sarah watched the two of them, her stern expression softening into something resembling approval. "Well, Julian, taking responsibility is the first step, but being a father requires more than walking out of a ballroom to make a dramatic point. It takes patience, sleepless nights, and showing up every single day."

"I know," Julian said, his voice steady with conviction. "I missed her first six years, but I refuse to miss another day." Sarah let out a long breath, a faint sigh of relief escaping her lips. "Come on. Let's go home. You can crash on the pull-out couch, and tomorrow we can start figuring out what a real family looks like." As the three of them walked toward the parking lot together under the soft glow of the streetlights, Julian realized that the glittering chandeliers of the wedding hall belonged to a past life he was finally glad to leave behind.
