Chapter 12

As the weeks passed, the media storm surrounding the aborted wedding slowly faded from the front pages, replaced by fresher scandals in the city's high-society circles. Julian focused entirely on his growing consulting business, working from a makeshift desk in Sarah’s guest room while spending every spare moment with Lily. The bond between father and daughter deepened steadily. Lily no longer looked at him with timid hesitation; instead, she ran to greet him at the door every evening, eager to show him her latest drawings or demand stories about the wooden animals he carved for her in the quiet hours of the night.

One crisp Saturday afternoon, while Julian and Lily were building an elaborate fortress out of cardboard boxes in the living room, the doorbell rang. Sarah, who was reading in the armchair nearby, stood up and walked to the front door. Through the frosted glass panel, she recognized a familiar, elegant silhouette standing on the porch. She pulled the door open to reveal Charlotte, dressed in a simple trench coat and sunglasses, looking remarkably subdued compared to the untouchable bride of a few weeks ago. The tension in the hallway spiked instantly as Julian stood up from the floor, brushing cardboard dust off his knees.

"Charlotte," Julian said quietly, stepping into the entryway while keeping Lily safely within view in the living room. Charlotte removed her sunglasses, revealing tired eyes that lacked the sharp, defensive edge he remembered. "Hello, Julian," she said softly, her voice devoid of its usual aristocratic hauteur. "I didn't come to start an argument. I just... I needed to see you outside of that ballroom. Outside of my mother's shadow." Julian nodded, gesturing for her to step inside, though the heavy air between them remained thick with the history of their brief, disastrous engagement.

Charlotte walked into the living room and paused when she saw Lily looking up from her cardboard fortress. The little girl clutched her pearl-strap handbag—which she still carried everywhere as a treasured talisman from the day she found her father—and watched Charlotte with cautious curiosity. Charlotte swallowed hard, a complex mix of regret and sorrow crossing her face. "I wanted to apologize, Lily," Charlotte said, her voice trembling slightly as she knelt down to meet the child's eyes. "I was cruel and selfish on a day that should have been about family. I'm truly sorry." Lily blinked, processing the apology before offering a quiet, forgiving nod. "It's okay," Lily whispered.
