Chapter 4

The cool evening air outside the reception hall hit Julian and Lily like a refreshing wave, sweeping away the stifling scent of roses and artificial perfection. The quiet courtyard stood in stark contrast to the chaos they had just left behind. Streetlights cast long, gentle shadows across the stone pavement, illuminating the grand facade of the venue from the outside. Julian gently set Lily down on a low stone bench near a bubbling fountain, kneeling before her once more. Her tears had subsided into occasional, soft sniffles, but her wide eyes still held a lingering trace of fear as she clutched her pearl-strap handbag tightly in her lap.

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Julian asked softly, brushing a stray strand of blonde hair away from her damp forehead. Lily nodded slowly, looking up at him with an expression of profound trust that both humbled and terrified him. "I missed you, Daddy," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the fountain. Julian felt a tear escape his own eye, tracing a warm path down his cheek. He had spent years believing that walking away from her mother had been the right choice for his career and stability, a cowardly bargain that had finally caught up with him in the most public way possible.

Footsteps echoed sharply behind them, and Julian turned to see Sarah, Lily’s maternal grandmother and legal guardian, hurrying out of the side entrance. Sarah’s face was pale with panic, her hands wringing a shawl she had wrapped hastily around her shoulders. When she saw Lily sitting safely beside Julian, the older woman stopped dead in her tracks, a mixture of immense relief and bitter resentment washing over her features. She had spent the last twenty minutes tearing through the venue, terrified that the child was lost forever in the labyrinthine hotel and banquet complex.

"Lily!" Sarah cried out, rushing forward to scoop the little girl into a fierce embrace. Lily buried her face in Sarah's shoulder, hugging her back tightly. Sarah looked up at Julian, her eyes flashing with anger. "How could you let this happen, Julian? You abandoned her when she was a baby, and now you parade her around like a prop in your glamorous new life?" Julian stood up slowly, meeting Sarah’s gaze without flinching. He knew he deserved her wrath, yet the sight of his daughter had awakened a protective instinct that could no longer be ignored or silenced by guilt.
