Chapter 10

True to Sarah’s warning, the corporate backlash arrived before noon. Julian’s smartphone buzzed incessantly on the kitchen table, flashing notifications from colleagues, executives, and news outlets. Ignoring the calls, he finally answered a direct line from Richard, the senior managing partner of the firm and a close personal friend of Eleanor. "Julian, are you out of your mind?" Richard's voice boomed through the speaker, tight with suppressed anger and embarrassment. "The board is in an uproar. The scandal with Charlotte’s family has completely blindsided our investors. We need you to issue a public retraction immediately."

Julian listened calmly, watching Lily color with crayons at the other end of the table. The contrast between the frantic, desperate corporate world and the quiet, grounding presence of his daughter could not have been starker. "There is nothing to retract, Richard," Julian replied evenly. "Lily is my daughter. I made a mistake hiding her away for years, but I am not going to lie about her existence to protect the firm's PR image." Richard sighed heavily on the other end of the line, the sound heavy with corporate fatigue. "Julian, loyalty to this firm means playing the game. Right now, you're choosing professional suicide."

"If keeping my job requires denying my own flesh and blood, then consider my resignation effective immediately," Julian said, his voice unwavering. Silence hung over the phone line for several long seconds before Richard spoke again, his tone dropping from managerial fury to genuine disappointment. "Think about this carefully, Julian. Once you walk away from this partnership, there's no coming back. You'll be starting from scratch." Julian looked at Lily, who looked up and flashed him a bright, gap-toothed smile. "I'm already building something much better," Julian replied softly, and hung up the phone.

He set the phone face down on the table, feeling an immense weight lift from his shoulders. The expensive suits, the corner office with floor-to-ceiling windows, and the hollow prestige of the corporate elite were gone in an instant. Yet, as he watched Lily meticulously color a picture of a house with a blue door and a smiling sun, Julian realized he had never felt richer. He was no longer running from his past or hiding his truth; he was finally present, standing firmly in the messy, beautiful reality of being a father.
