Chapter 6

Julian pushed open the heavy oak doors and stepped back into the reception hall, leaving Sarah and Lily momentarily in the quiet foyer. The atmosphere inside had shifted from stunned silence to a tense, suffocating murmur. Heads turned instantly as he re-entered, the guests watching him with wide-eyed curiosity, eager to see how the scandalous drama would unfold. Charlotte was standing near the head table, flanked by Eleanor, who looked as though she were ready to summon security. The elaborate floral arches and glittering chandeliers suddenly felt less like a celebration and more like a theatrical stage set for a tragedy.
Charlotte crossed her arms, her white lace wedding dress rustling loudly in the quiet room. Her eyes were hard, flashing with a mixture of humiliation and betrayed pride. "So, you decided to come back," Charlotte said, her voice carrying across the silent hall. "Care to explain what kind of circus you have brought into our lives, Julian? Who is that child, and why are you pretending she belongs to you?" The direct question demanded an answer, not just from Charlotte, but from the dozens of influential guests whose eyes were locked on Julian with predatory fascination.

Julian walked slowly down the center aisle, feeling the weight of a hundred gazes. He stopped a few feet away from the bride, maintaining a calm, steady posture that infuriated Eleanor even further. "She isn't a circus, Charlotte, and I'm not pretending," Julian replied clearly, his voice echoing in the grand space. "Her name is Lily. She is my daughter from a relationship prior to meeting you. I buried that part of my past because I was afraid it didn't fit the picture-perfect life I was trying to build. That was my failure, not hers."
An audible gasp rippled through the crowd. Eleanor stepped forward, shaking with indignation. "You lied to my daughter! You brought her into a marriage under false pretenses!" she shouted, her refined composure finally cracking. Charlotte stared at Julian, tears of anger pricking her eyes. "You deceived me, Julian," she whispered, her voice trembling. "All those conversations about our future, and you kept a secret this massive from me?" Julian looked at her with genuine remorse, realizing the depth of the betrayal she felt, even as he knew he could no longer live a lie to protect her vanity.
