Chapter 5

The courtyard grew still as Sarah set Lily down gently, keeping the child securely behind her as if shielding her from further harm. Julian took a deep breath, feeling the cool night air fill his lungs. He knew that apologizing would not undo six years of absence, but it was the only place to begin. "Sarah, you're right to be furious with me," Julian said, his voice measured and devoid of the defensive pride that had characterized his interaction with Charlotte. "I was a coward. I let fear and ambition dictate my choices, and I missed the most important years of my daughter's life."

Sarah crossed her arms, her expression remaining hard, though the initial panic had faded into a tired resignation. "Words are cheap, Julian. Especially words spoken outside a luxury wedding reception while your bride is presumably still inside wondering what happened to her fairy tale," Sarah retorted, casting a cynical glance toward the glowing double doors of the ballroom. "Lily doesn't need an absentee father who only remembers she exists when she accidentally crashes his party. She needs stability, consistency, and someone who won't vanish when things get difficult."

Lily looked between the two adults, sensing the heavy tension even if she did not fully understand the words. She tugged gently on Sarah's shawl. "Grandma, Daddy was nice to me. He held me," the little girl murmured softly. Sarah’s expression softened imperceptibly at the child's words, though she refused to let her guard down entirely. She knew how much Lily had longed for a father, having asked countless questions about the man in the framed photograph on their living room shelf. But Sarah also knew the pain of broken promises, having watched her own daughter struggle through the fallout of Julian's sudden departure years ago.

"Listen to me, Julian," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "If you want to be a part of Lily's life now, you cannot just drop in when it’s convenient. It’s all or nothing. And right now, it looks like your 'all' is tied up inside a very expensive building with a very angry bride." Julian looked back at the doors of the reception hall. He knew Charlotte would not wait forever, and the guests would soon demand answers. Yet, for the first time in his adult life, the prospect of returning to that gilded cage felt entirely impossible. He had found his daughter, and he refused to let her go again.
