Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Dark

The interior of the warehouse was vast, cavernous, and smelled intensely of old dust, rotting timber, and stagnant harbor water. Shafts of pale moonlight filtered down through broken skylights high above, casting eerie, geometric patterns across towering stacks of wooden crates and rusted industrial machinery. Clara stood just inside the heavy metal door, her chest heaving as she tried to control her breathing, pressing her hand over her mouth to muffle any sound.
Outside, a heavy fist pounded against the metal door twice, followed by the muffled rattle of the exterior latch.
"She's inside," a gruff voice echoed through the metal. "Sweep the perimeter. Check the loading bays."
Clara backed away slowly into the gloom, her white dress glowing faintly in the dim moonlight like a beacon. Realizing her mistake, she quickly gathered the heavy layers of satin and slipped behind a towering stack of shipping crates labeled with faded export stamps. She crouched down on the concrete floor, pulling her knees to her chest, her fingers desperately clutching the damp letter in her pocket.
A moment later, the heavy metal door creaked open with a slow, agonizing groan. Soft footsteps echoed across the concrete floor, stopping just a few feet away from where she hid. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the floor, cutting through the dust motes dancing in the air, inching closer and closer to her hiding spot.
Clara closed her eyes, reciting her father's old advice in her head: When you are cornered, become the shadow.
The footsteps stopped right beside the stack of crates. The beam of light illuminated the edge of her white satin shoe resting on the concrete.
"Found her," a voice hissed into a radio comms unit.
Before the guard could step around the corner, a sudden, deafening clatter echoed from the opposite side of the massive warehouse—a heavy iron chain dropping onto a metal floor, followed by the clatter of falling tools. The guard spun around, cursing softly, and rushed away toward the noise, his flashlight beam bouncing frantically against the distant walls.
"Clara," a raspy, low voice whispered from the darkness directly behind her.
May you like
Clara stifled a scream, whipping around with her fists raised, only to find a weathered man in a trench coat kneeling in the shadows behind the crates, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.
